NAMI Presentations this week!
Staff from the DuPage County Chapter of the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) have been providing student presentations at Jefferson Middle School for the last five years. For seventh and eighth grade students, the main presentation involves a discussion about the signs and symptoms of mental illness and de-stigmatizing mental illness. Students are taught how to ask for help for themselves and for a friend. For the students, the highlight of the presentation is a testimonial by an adult with a mental illness who overcame challenges, often in middle and high school, and learned coping skills to lead a successful life.
For our sixth graders, the presentation is entitled "We All Have Mental Health". The focus is on how to cope with typical stresses which students encounter and how to get help for more serious life stresses. This presentation is meant to be more interactive and shown in classroom size groups. The seventh and eight grade presentation is whole grade level. There is a quick NAMI survey for students to complete at the end of the presentation. Also, at Advisory the following day of the presentations, the Jefferson Pupil Personnel Staff, or PPS, ask all students to complete an exit slip indicating if they would like to follow up and talk with a PPS member about the NAMI presentation.
For the 2020-21 school year, during remote learning, the exit slip will include a couple of questions asking the student to rate on a scale what their current level of stress and their level of connection to peers and staff. The PPS members, Mrs. Gerber, Mrs. Osterman, Ms. Clow, Ms. Farfan, and Mr. Schweikert, will make contact with students according to their answers on the exit slip. The NAMI presentation and the weekly Second Step lessons during Advisory address the schools requirement to provide student information on suicide prevention and anti-bullying. Your students will attend a presentation virtually on either Tuesday 11/17/2020 and/or Wednesday 11/18/2020. Please call one of the PPS members at (630)516-7800 if you have a question.
