Term 2 Week 2 - 10th May 2022
Principals Message
Welcome to term 2 everyone. It has been another positive start to the term. The students have settled in well and they are enjoying their work. The science in room 4 has been particularly motivating.
Room 1 has 4 new entrants who started at the beginning of the term. They are Tia Tuhiwai, Harper Bowmar, Avery Powell and Kyzah Hape. They have all settled in well.
As you can see we have updated our newsletter. We have noticed that more and more of our parents use their phones to access our newsletter, Facebook page, and website. We hope you find this easier to read and interact with. Please give us any feedback or suggestions.
This term we welcome Christian Reynolds who will teach Room 6 every second Tuesday to release Paul Ruddell in his role as SENCO.
We also welcome Paige Lloydd who is a 2nd year student teacher from the University of Auckland doing her practicum in Room 6 for the next 7 weeks.
We have had a few COVID cases affecting attendance and we are hoping that we will shortly pass the worst of it. Our 2022 term 1 average attendance was 85% compared to 92% in term 2 last year. This is very good compared to other schools in our area.
This term is going to be another busy one. Our year 3-8 students are very excited about their camp to Kawau Island in week 3. We also have our production this term. This year we are doing Peter Pan. Towards the end of term, students will again go through some assessments in preparation for reports being sent home early in Term 3.
Please do call in if you have any questions or queries.

Epro 8
A huge congratulations to the year 7-8 Epro8 team that came first in the Whangarei semi-final competition and 5th in the final.
It is really exciting to see our small rural school challenging the big schools.
Both teams showed incredible engineering, mathematical and scientific knowledge. These skills are going to be a big part of NZ's future and these kids are well on their way to meeting the challenges ahead.

Alexis King - Kahui Council
Congratulations to Alexis King, one of our year 8 students from 2021, who was chosen as a Kahui Council member for her house at Whangarei Girls High School.
She was awarded her certificate at the school assembly last week.
It is great to see the leadership she showed at Kokopu School continuing on into high school. As our only year 8 girl last year, Alexis was a great role model and we are very proud that she is showing such great leadership again this year.
Property Update
It was a busy holiday here at school with up to 5 projects going on at the same time.
- PE Shed - The concrete pad is ready for our PE Shed to be built on. Delays to steel have postponed the build until about week 5 or 6.
- Property modification - You may have noticed lots of yellow lines and non-slip areas around the school. These are to improve visibility and access for one of our students.
- Front entrance - We have had a tidy up of the front entrance as part of the above project. Once we have a sign up, the car park next to the gate will become a dedicated accessibility car park. Further work on the whole car park will happen at the end of the year.
- CCTV - We now have a state of the art CCTV system in the school. This will hopefully deter any vandalism after hours and help if we are ever in the situation of a school lockdown.
- Security system upgrade - We have installed a new security system to allow us to better monitor the school including Petes shed and new PE shed areas.
- New phone system. Our new phone system should be up and running this week. This will mean fewer missed calls and the ability to intercom to classrooms if needed.
- Redevelopment of old PE shed and Library office - We will shortly start redeveloping the old PE shed and library office space. We will have two new office spaces for learning support and a resource area. These works will start at the end of the term.
Parent Open Day and Pink Shirt Day
Whanau Open Day and Pink Shirt Day - Friday 13th - 9am - 10:35am.
To celebrate whanau being back on site and the great work our Kokopu kids are doing, we are having an open morning for all parents, caregivers and whanau to come in and visit their child’s classrooms.
We will start the day with our Pink Shirt Day assembly at 9am (you are welcome to wear pink too) and then you are welcome to join your child in their classroom for the first block of time. There will be some morning tea for parents in the staff room at 10:20am.

- Easter Raffle. Thank you to all the families who supported our Easter raffle.
The following people won an Easter prize from our draw last term;

- Cyber Safety Agreements . We are still waiting for more of these forms. If you need an new one, please contact the school office.
- Carpark and gate. Please come to the gate in the carpark to collect your children at the end of the day. We do not want children walking through the carpark without an adult as it is unsafe with the amount of cars and limited parking. We have a teacher on duty at the gate each day to supervise. Can we ask parents and visitors to make sure they close the gates if you use them? We have a few children that may be prone to walking out an open gate. Thank you.
- Absences. A reminder that it is important to contact the school before 9.30am when your child will be absent. You can either phone, email or let us know via our Skool Loop app. We need to know where your children are so we know they are safe and can mark them correctly on the roll. See details in this newsletter on how to download our Skool Loop App.
- Camps. Room 3, 4, 6 Camp is happening on the 16th to 20th of May at Camp Bentzon, Kawau Island
- Iceblock Sales. Ice Blocks are for sale again to raise funds for the school. Many children who come to school with $2 like to buy their friend an ice block. Please could you send a note to say they are allowed to do this? The Room 6 children do ask but a note would be easier for them.

Mangakahia Lions Roar to Support Our Community.
On Tuesday 26th April Mangakahia Lions Club hosted special guests Tony Morris from NEST - Northland Emergency Services Trust and David and Barbie Scott from Warkworth Lions Club at it's monthly Dinner Meeting.
The Mangakahia Lions Club had been involved in fundraising projects to make generous donations to 2 very worthwhile causes. The first of these was for a $10,000 donation to NEST - (Northland Emergency Services Trust); Northland Rescue Helicopters to help purchase a Lucas CPR Device to enable the helicopter's paramedics to initiate mechanical CPR if their cardiac patients re-arrest, which is especially challenging in the confines of the rescue helicopter. The cost of the Lucas CPR Device is $29,630 and NEST is raising funds to purchase 2 of these; 1 for each helicopter. Tony thanked the club for it's generous donation towards this valuable piece of equipment.
David, President of Warkworth Lions and his wife Barbie were present to also accept a $10,000 donation towards their club's project of fundraising to build a PICU - (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) Treatment Room at Auckland Starship Children's Hospital. In accepting the donation from Mangakahia Lions Club, David pointed out that their target for 1 PICU Treatment Room was $406,700 and so far they had raised
$224,898, so the $10,000 donation would certainly boost that total.
It was very fitting having Tony and David receiving the club's donations, as the 2 organisations - Northland Rescue Helicopters and Auckland Starship Children's Hospital work closely together to transport and to care for our very sick children from all over Northland.
The Mangakahia Lions Club has 24 members and meets at Poroti twice monthly. The club is always active in the community and has recently been involved in fundraising projects such as firewood splitting, a charity golf tournament and assisting with the Zonta Book Sale. Other organisations that have been supported with donations in the past year are North Haven Hospice, Ronald McDonald House, Fred Hollows Foundation, Special Olympics, World Vision & The Red Puppy Appeal plus local schools.
New members are welcome to be involved with the valuable projects the club is involved in to support organisations like Northland Emergency Helicopters and Starship Children's Hospital.
