"Oh, The Places You'll Go, " by Dr. Seuss
Dear 5th graders,
Dr. Seuss's book has so many words and messages that we want you to hear, believe, and live this year in 5th grade. Please take a minute and watch the video using the link above. The book should speak to you about moving forward in your life and facing the challenges that come your way.
Listen for the following words and phrases....
- today is your day
- off to great places
- head full of brains
- shoes full of feet
- ready
- fun to be done
- decide where to go
- too smart to go down any not-so-good street
- you'll take the lead
- step with care
- life is a great balancing act
- you will succeed
- you will move mountains

I have taught grades Pre-K through fourth. This is my first year in fifth grade, and I love it! It has been a privilege and a blessing to work with this group of children for three years. I taught both first and third grades as this group moved through. Parents and guardians, you have so many reasons to be proud of your kids. They have grown greatly over the last few years, and I am excited to see the growth and changes they will experience in this new year.
Love,
Missy Anzick

A little bit about me....
I'm a mother of 4: Jeremiah-27, Nikki-23, Allie-19, Jessie-17. My husband Tom and I have lived in Corpus Christi, TX, Naples, Italy, Meridian, MS, and Ramstein, Germany.
I've had the privilege of teaching children in grades 3-5 in the civilian world and on military bases. I also am an adjunct teacher at Frederick Community College.
Now entering my 32nd year of teaching, I am excited to share this upcoming year with you and am looking forward to a successful year.
This saying is my belief for you, so please, "Look in the Mirror!"
Love,
Mrs. Titus

This is my first year teaching and I am working in the Pyramid program. Spring Ridge is an excellent school and I am thankful and blessed to be here!
On a personal level...
My husband and I have been married for 2 years now and we have two little ones: Leila - 4, and Leo - 18 months. Family is everything to me.
Beyond family, I also have been teaching dance at Dance Unlimited in Frederick for over 10 years now. I received my undergrad in Dance from Jacksonville University and went on to dance at Walt Disney World. I also danced with companies in NYC and in the Philippines.
I am looking forward to bringing my dance background into Spring Ridge, along with the Pyramid program to have a creative and successful year in 5th grade.
With Love,
Mrs. Ryley
Language Arts
Students will be writing a personal narrative during our first writing unit. Up to this point, students have been adding ideas to their jot list, choosing an idea, and writing long. Our goal has been to increase writing stamina and gather ideas. Some students are already able to write for 20-30 minutes.
Soon, students will choose an idea from their entries and write their first draft of a small moment in their life. Lessons will teach students how to write a meaningful personal narrative. Students will continue to revise this draft as they learn new techniques.
Ask your child what the difference is between a "watermelon" idea and a "seed" idea. Our goal is to write about a small moment that reaches into their heart.
We can't wait to see what our 5th grade writers will produce.
Math
Our 5th graders have been working diligently on their math skills. Every day they practice their math facts. This year, SRES has instilled a math fact program (Parent Letter). Students work on all basic math fluency skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. 5th grade has shown true promise in their mental math knowledge! Here is a link to a game for your child to reinforce those skills: Fun Brain Tic Tac Toe
Focus Standards:
- Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division.
- Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole number exponents to denote powers of 10.
If your student needs help understanding these focus standards, try these resources:

Science Update:
The focus with our Earth Systems Unit is to learn how four of the Earth's spheres interact with each other.
Geosphere
Biosphere
Atmosphere
Hydrosphere
The students have taken one nature walk on which they saw several interactions between the spheres. They are looking through scientific eyes at these interactions and communicating like a scientist through a detailed diagram of what they saw.
We will be moving deeper into the Hydrosphere and students will name the types of reservoirs and compare the amount of salt water and fresh water on the Earth by interpreting data and graphing information.
We will be be reading informational text to identify the main ideas about the Hydrosphere and explain the details that support those main ideas.
Artful thinking routines, Native American Legends and cultural dances are embedded throughout the unit.
We have kicked off our year with exciting Artists in Residence. The students are learning to apply content in meaningful ways as they work with each artist.
On Friday, we will finish up our work with Beat boxer, Max Bent. Max helped us to visualize change over time as we graphed the tempo used in our class composition. Next we are going to graph exponential growth as we increase our tempo.
Next week we will begin working with Synetic Theater to retell the Native American Legend, The Rainmakers. We will use drama to help us understand narrative text sign posts (Again and Again) and the author's message and theme.
