The Wallace Wildcat
Hoboken, NJ- September 17, 2021
DEAR WALLACE SCHOOL PARENTS AND GUARDIANS,
Once again, please be reminded that our annual Back to School Night is scheduled for Thursday, September 23, 2021 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. This event allows our parents to come into the building, walk the halls, and acquire a better understanding as to what a typical day of a Wallace School student looks like. We hope you are able to take this opportunity to visit with us and discover all of the fantastic initiatives that are going on. We encourage you to meet with our Related Arts specialists in the areas of Art, Music, Physical Education, Science, and World Language after meeting your child’s homeroom teacher. We hope to see you there!
Lunch Applications
Arrival Routines
Prior to arriving at school each day, please complete the COVID-19 Questionnaire on Genesis for each student. At times it can be challenging to do so while at Wallace as there are many families using devices at the same time. For more information about access to this questionnaire, please review the Genesis webinar: http://drive.google.com/file/d/12IkwL7EICI0JNmjExsdgNffMNR-O8O50/view
If you do not yet have access to Genesis, please complete the Genesis Parent Portal Request Access Form: http://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeAUvfz30kaSZE4N3pTHB-BDz28ixSuJwjlhKSeM3SyCumDJQ/viewform?usp=sf_link
Lastly, after our teachers come out to greet their classes, they will begin to head inside. When your child's class begins moving in a line towards the school building, please wait on the side of the playground or sidewalk to allow for a clear path for the classes.
Kindergarten
First Grade
We also practiced calendar skills. Everyday we will fill in our calendar, graph the weather for the day, and fill in our counting to 100 chart. We played detectives by finding the beginning and ending sounds. We concluded the day by reviewing some of the kindergarten skills to help refresh our memories.
Second Grade
Third Grade
This week in third grade students are getting acquainted with using their Chromebooks and are doing a stellar job! We spent this week navigating different websites and students have been submitting work on Google Classroom.
In Language Arts, we have started our first novel of the year, "The Littles" and we are discussing the genre of fantasy and the skill of predicting. Students are also getting familiar with using text evidence in Night Writes and exploring different character traits.
In math we are beginning to identify things that come in groups and starting to solve multiplication equations.
In Social Studies, we are exploring Hoboken and its past and also incorporating Move This World to discuss our emotional building blocks.
Students are doing a great job getting accustomed to their new schedules and the third grade team is looking forward to meeting parents on Back to School Night this upcoming week. We are excited for a year filled with learning, laughs, and memories!
Fourth Grade
ELA
Our 4th grade readers were very enthusiastic about the first week of school & to begin the novel Wonder. Wonder is about a boy August or "Auggie" Pullman, a ten-year-old boy living in New York City, who was born with a facial deformity that has made it difficult for him to make friends. He is starting school for the first time in 5th Grade. He lives with his parents, his older sister Via, and his dog Daisy.
Wonder really focuses on the importance of being kind as Auggie is faced with many difficult challenges throughout the novel. We examined the quote , “When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind.” Students had to explain what the quote meant to them and why.
Math
Our 4th grade mathematicians spent the week reviewing multiplication by using and creating arrays to multiply. Our mathematicians also became familiar with minute math which is part of our everyday math routine. Students enjoyed using dry erase markers and challenging themselves to see how many multiplication problems they were able to solve.
Fifth Grade
Ms. McGeehin's Art on a Cart
This week in art class, kindergartners are showing off their creativity with our game “Start With a Shape!” Each student uses their imagination to turn a page of simple shapes into a collection of unique drawings!
