AIG Parent Cafe Update
The second Parent Cafe in our ongoing series was held January 31, enlightening attendees about unique emotional and behavioral aspects of Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) students. To view the session materials presented by members of the CMS Advanced Studies department, see below:
- QHMS AIG Parent Cafe #2 presentation
- Book resources for parents
- Gifted films resource
- High Achiever vs. Creative Thinking vs. Gifted
- Characteristics of Gifted chart
Principal Rachael Neill and staff addressed current initiatives at QH specifically for the AIG/TD student population, as well as complementary professional development activities that benefit the learning of all students. In the coming weeks, select QH teachers will attend training to better differentiate and elevate Science lessons; a group of female students will participate in Girls Go Beyond field trip in March; and several "outside the classroom" support groups are in the works!
The next session in the AIG Parent Cafe series will be announced soon, but in the meantime, the following resources are great avenues for information:
- Follow the CMS Advanced Studies department on Twitter at @CMS_Advanced or on Facebook
- Visit the SENG Organization website (Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted): valuable information, online seminars, and resources for families with gifted children. www.sengifted.org
- Your child's teacher is always your first contact about class-specific concerns, but you can also reach out to QHMS's designated AIG/TD staff facilitators: Ms. Lashae Tietsort (QHMS Lead AIG facilitator & Math MCL) or Ms. Renee Melrose (Humanities MCL).

STEM & Entrepreneurship - 2017 Global Student Online Conference

The theme for this year is "STEM + Entrepreneurship." The event provides an international forum for the presentation, discussion, and sharing of best practices in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and entrepreneurship in schools and other academic settings, including:
- Fostering a better understanding of how STEM and entrepreneurship engage students, teachers, and administrators in a conversation about learning.
- Assisting teachers and administrators in understanding how STEM and entrepreneurship impact learning both in and out of the classroom.
- Strengthening the relationship between students, teachers, and administrators about STEM + entrepreneurship in the curriculum.
Sign up at http://www.GlobalStudentConference.com to register to attend, to be kept informed, or to submit a proposal. The call for proposals for the conference is now open, and submissions will be accepted on a first-come basis. While everyone is invited to attend the actual event, conference session proposals will only be accepted from students! Archived recordings of presentations from the previous years are available on the site to help students become familiar with the concept. As well, training and support are provided to presenters, many of whom will be presenting for the first time.
See you online!
