PWCS Specialty Programs
Information Session Coming Up Soon
You're Invited!!!
You are invited to attend a special session on all of the Prince William County Schools Specialty Programs. You will have an opportunity to learn about the broad range of opportunities available to PWCS middle school students at the upcoming Middle School Specialty Program general information session. It will be held on October 14 and 15 from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Kelly Leadership Center. Representatives of specialty programs will be available to answer your questions and provide detailed information about their respective programs at both meetings.
Your son or daughter has the following options:
• Remain in the regular program in your base school;
• Apply for the specialty program in your base school;
• Transfer for a specialty program at another school; or
• Transfer to a traditional school for grades 1–8.
Applications must be completed for participation in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program, the Mathematics and Science Programs, World Languages, and Traditional Schools even if the program location is in your child's base school. Applications are due by February 1, 2020 for most PWCS schools. If the program receives applications for more students than the program can accept or the school can house, a lottery is held to select program participants. In the event a school becomes overcrowded, the program may only be open to students within the school's boundary and may be closed to all transfer students. Additionally, other programs may be filled through lottery if necessary due to capacity.
Feel free to let us know if you have any questions.
Thank you!

VIP Volunteers of All Grades Needed!!!
Dear Parents,
The fourth grade classes are going to participate in a program called Safe at Home Safe Alone on Wednesday, October 30 from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. The program is designed to provide children with information about real life situations that could occur when home alone, along with information on life skills that enable a child to cope with these situations. Each student will receive a Youth Book, which they will take home after participating in the program.
Additionally, a Prince William County Sheriff Deputy will be visiting our fourth-grade students to speak about gun safety, date to be determined. While everyone may not have the same opinion on guns, it’s possible that one day, your child may be exposed to these weapons at home, at a friend’s residence, a relative’s house, or on the street. The Gun Safety program is not meant to sway any political or personal beliefs, it is designed to keep kids safe. If you wish for more information about this program, please visit http://www.projectchildsafe.org/ or contact the school counselors, Miss Johnson or Ms. Atkins via email at: johnsodp@pwcs.edu or atkinsjm@pwcs.edu.
In order to provide students with this program, we need parent volunteers to help teach the program lessons. A two-hour training session will be provided for parents who are interested in helping on Friday, October 4, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. until – 11:30a.m. in the Conference Room.
If you are interested in helping and are able to attend the parent volunteer training on Friday, October 4, 2019, please email us to let us know you will be able to attend. If you would like to help but are unable to attend the training, please let me know so we can arrange to meet at another time.
Thank you so much, your support is greatly appreciated!
