"GET COMFORTABLE BEING UNCOMFORTABLE."
At our first staff meetings at the beginning of the year, I presented a slide with this message on it to all staff. I stressed that the greatest growth occurs outside of our comfort zones. I followed that up by giving a shoutout to preschool teacher Mrs. Stern for being the first to do so at our upcoming first day of school. As you may recall, she sang karaoke for our students as they arrived that day.
Last week, I received an email from a former student who had recently graduated. It means a lot to us educators when someone reaches out and lets you know how something you did helped them. More times than not, those words go unspoken or unwritten. I am always excited when a student takes time to share; it's rewarding and also shows their steps to leading a grateful life. After I read it, I asked if it would be okay if I shared what she wrote. She said to go ahead.

RE: Thanks for the advice
A few weeks ago I was standing in my hallway and I was super anxious about something. I think it may have been the lunch I had planned with my uncle where he wanted to talk about my future plans, which is a topic I myself am unsure of. And for some reason, I just thought of you in Consumer Ed saying "Get comfortable being uncomfortable".
Me, being the anxious person who is uncomfortable in any situation that I am, that saying is going to stay with me for awhile. In the grand scheme of things, to most people it doesn't seem like a huge step. But for me, I'd say it's a pretty decent one. A step that I hope leads me in the direction of bigger and better things! So thanks for the that, I hope all is well at the school for you!
Also, I went to Buffalo Wild Wings before seeing the new IT movie and had the fries with the salt and vinegar seasoning that you recommended and goodness they were amazing! Cheers for the suggestion!

I am so proud to hear that she is taking those steps to address areas of her life that are uncomfortable for her. My hope is that we can take more steps out of our comfort zones to provide those experiences and learning opportunities for our students. Try a new sport, visit a new place, learn to do a new activity together; those moments allow us to model the learning process that we want our kiddos to emulate. Who knows? Maybe trying a different seasoning on your french fries at Buffalo Wild Wings can be the starting point :)

The Life of an Apple
Full STEAM Ahead in 2B!!!
The students in 2B did a STEAM Engineering activity. The students worked in pairs to design and build an apple gathering tool. They had a chance to learn some strategies on how to make paper stronger. The students made paper “apples” out of green and red paper. Their challenge was to make tools that they could pick up the apples with. They could only use paper, tape, scissors, and staples for building their tools. The students then got a chance to try their tools out. The kiddos learned a lot and had fun too!

Support the Wilkens Family in the Fight Against Cancer
My name is Michelle Hinrichs’ and I am a very close friend with Austin & Ashleigh Wilkens (parents of 5th Graders Ashtin & Keegan Wilkens). About a month ago they found out Austin has Testicular Cancer. He underwent surgery a couple weeks ago to have the tumor removed, but he has a long road ahead of chemotherapy and possibly radiation (or even another surgery).
The financial strain has been difficult for them. As such, GoFundMe page has been established for the community to offer their support in helping to offset their medical bills. That link can be found below.
Shoutout to the Steamer Volleyball Team
Steamer Volleyball donated some time prior to the start of the school year to help the office staff move into their new office space. Special thanks to the girls and good luck this season!!!
Penny Wars (For The Kids)
Over the past week and a half, the Lil Steamers of #SteamerNation were able to raise EXACTLY $1,000 for University of Iowa Dance Marathon, which provides funding for the University of Iowa Stead Family Chidren's Hospital. The "A" team (KA, 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, & 5A) won our fundraising Penny War with $402.13 raised! Each of the students in these homerooms earned a "We Fight Together; We Fight FTK" bracelet for their efforts. In addition, Mrs. Price's 2A class raised the most as an individual class with $119.42! Their surprise reward is a pizza party! Great job to all who participated to help in this worthwhile cause!
