Curriculum, Testing & Dates
Let's talk about what we are doing, why and when.
There is a lot going on, and we are learning so much!
We always begin the year with baseline tests (where are they starting when it comes to what they know). Then we know where to go from there and how to plan. That means that we are testing all the subjects: reading, writing, math. Our different tests will be done on through test booklets, verbal discussions, paper/pencil, cut and paste, on the computer...
The students will also take test called the FRA (Foundational Reading Assessment) and/or RI (Reading Inventory) and MI (Math Inventory) on the computers. These tests go at their speed and get harder as they answer correctly. When they have answered consistently a certain number of times, the test ends. This is the same test that they did in Kindergarten and will continue to take for a few years. It is very important that they try their best so we can truly see what they know and need to work on.
Later on we will have the state test, CoGAT. This test will also give us information about the kids and what they know - but in a different way. This test results can be used to see if they qualify for advanced courses and to also help us see where they need help.
