Principal's Message
WMS Families,
The end of 3rd quarter is in sight, which will hopefully bring warmer weather!
As we continue to the homestretch, I'd like to remind our students about the importance of GRIT. Anything worth completing will require overcoming adversity. It is healthy and normal for students to experience frustration with academics. It is in these difficult moments where kids are encouraged to learn strategies to persevere. There are a variety of strategies they have learned from parents, family members, and teachers, and it is important to help them to use them when frustration sits in. To help reinforce this, our advisory classes will focus on using grit during the next few weeks. Our Ambassadors will be going into each of the classes to teach lessons! We are so excited to have our students take an active role in what and how they learn! Personally, music resonates strongly with me. A song came up on my iTunes that I thought really captured the essence of grit... pop/punk may not be your style, but I think we can all agree on the message!
I am incredibly proud of our student groups at WMS! I am a firm believer that if students can help make decisions and be in charge of their learning, the potential is limitless! Student leadership has come from a variety of places this quarter from our band, choir, NJHS, Publications class, Art/Honors Art Club, and our Ambassadors... not to mention all of the students who are making impacts on their community outside of school! To see these types of stories and more, make sure you like our page, @washmiddle1 , on Facebook!
Finally, I'd like to recognize our custodial staff for working so hard during this cold, snowy season! They have prioritized student and staff safety by getting out in the weather to shovel and spread salt; Sometimes multiple times in the morning!
Thank you for sharing your child's school experience with us! We truly appreciate the opportunity to help guide their learning and look forward to working with you the rest of the year!

Can Kids Get School Notifications?
Yes! There are a couple of ways for kids to receive notifications for school closings.
The easiest way to receive notifications is to download the Mehlville School District app. It's available in Google Play and in the App Store. Just search for Mehlville School District. Make sure notifications are allowed on the device to get snow day alerts.
Parents can also add their kids' cell phone numbers as additional contacts in SchoolMessenger. Then kids can receive text messages and phone calls, depending on how parents set up those preferences.
