The Wallace Wildcat
Dear Wallace School Parents and Guardians,
We have much to be grateful for. As a school community, we made it through the initial start of a new school year and we’ve arrived at the end of the first marking period. One quarter of the school year is officially in the books. The manner in which our young learners are growing by leaps and bounds is truly special. When I reflect and think about what I am grateful for as a member of this school family, a few things come to mind. To see some of the students and how they have grown since my first September as Principal five years ago is something I cherish. I am grateful for a staff that continues to come to work each and every day and give all they have in the service of the community’s children. And I am especially grateful for the support of the parents and guardians of our learners. Your support makes this school truly dynamic.
I am also thankful for the pride our students have in their work. Our 4th grade students took ownership of their research projects in impressive fashion. Students were given the opportunity to choose a Native Amreican Tribe to research. Students identified key aspects of their tribes location, food, and customs to be displayed in a diorama. They then created a presentation using Google Slides to be presented to their classmates. One of the important reasons why we study social studies is to learn from the experiences of others. Some of our Wildcats decided to take this time to share important lessons from our past. They used their research on the Trail of Tears as a platform to discuss social justice. These presentations were both entertaining and enlightening.
On Tuesday, our Student Council and PTO led school wide initiative of Wallace Gives Back was a HUGE Success! The 3rd, 4th and 5th grades collected boxes and boxes of non perishable food items, while grades K-2 participated in a toiletry drive to give back to our Hoboken community. The Student Council along with their advisors, Ms. Lawrence and Mrs. Martinez conducted a walking field trip to the Hoboken Shelter where they were able to hand over the collected items, learn about the services provided by the shelter to help those in need and wish all of the shelter's guests a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving. At Wallace, we believe that giving back can be done at any age. We are very proud of our students for working so hard on this initiative. Of course, we could not do all of this without the support of our wonderful families.
As you gather with family and friends tomorrow, take a moment to reflect on what you are grateful for as a member of this amazing school family. Whatever it is, be sure to talk about it with your child(ren). Share what makes our community special with one another just as I’ve shared with you here. It is the perfect way to continue our work together to ensure our children grow and become all that they can be. On behalf of the Wallace School Staff, I wish you and yours a wonderful Thanksgiving. If you are travelling, be safe.
On Friday, December 13th our Parent Teacher Organization meeting will take place in the cafeteria at 8:30am. Additionally, we will host class pictures and retakes on December 3rd.
Until next week… Martin Shannon, Principal
