Book Discussion - Chapter 7 - Milking the Data
Making it Real
The abstract concept of what a graph or chart represents can be hard for students to grasp. One way to start out then, is with students making and interpreting their own graphs. Try having students:
- Collect data that is relevant to them.
- Create their own charts and graphs with that data.
- Interpret their charts/graphs.
- Interpret other students' charts/graphs.
- Work up to interpreting any graph or chart that is given to them.
Lesson Flow
- Take a poll/survey to collect data (verbally or electronically). Teacher or student can create depending on grade level.
- Discuss the results and lead into "how can we make a "picture" that shows this info"? (chart/graph)
- Create the charts/graphs in a grade level appropriate app/website.
- Have students create questions to go with their charts/graphs.
- Do several exercises with these parameters.
- Advance to giving sets of charts/graphs students have not created for them to interpret.
