Principal Update
8/21/20
Dear Beaumont Community
Dear Beaumont Community
We are almost there! Next week teachers will have some additional Professional Development as we prepare for students. Digital Learning will begin on September 2nd. You should have received details from the district about the first two weeks of school. If you have not received it, I have included the message below.
Individual schedules for students are currently being finalized and will be released towards the end of next week. Our administration team understands families and students may want to make requests to change their schedule. At this time, we are not able to make teacher or class period-specific changes to students' schedules (unless there is a scheduling error). If you have schedule specific questions, please know you are welcome to connect with our Assistant Principal, Ms.Davis and she will work with you to problem-solve around your issue.
Beaumont Administration and staff have been eagerly planning and training for our new normal for weeks now. Every PPS Staff will be using a book to support online learning entitled, The Distance Learning Playbook. A parent version will be available soon. To get more information about this parent resource, you can follow this link https://us.corwin.com/en-us/nam/the-distance-learning-playbook-for-parents/book276593?priorityCode=FFSE207B8&utm_medium=email&utm_content=FFSE207B8&utm_campaign=not+tracked&utm_term=&em=ec865bef45d4db3ea941c0cf40a2dc81fb2bd3734dd302fd0de8ecb066e7b489&utm_source=adestr
Library Books and Textbooks
Ms. McMillian and Ms. Mittlestadt are planning for a textbook and library book dispersal. They are working to present the community with a seamless process that will allow students to collect new materials as well as return items that need to be returned. More information to come.

PPS Message: Schedules for the First Two Weeks
Schedules for the First Two Weeks of School Dear PPS Families, We want to share more information about the first two weeks of the school year and remind you that they will focus on connection, orientation, and social-emotional support. You can find schedules for our 2020-21 “soft start,” which starts on Wednesday, September 2, by clicking here. The purpose of the “soft start” schedules is to provide teachers, parents, families, and students with an opportunity to develop relationships, become more familiar with distance learning platforms and tools, and build positive virtual classroom culture. To give students a chance to develop a daily rhythm, a social-emotional learning activity will be included and attendance will be taken each day. As we start the school year with Comprehensive Distance Learning until at least November 5, you may see terminology that is unfamiliar to you. For clarification about the difference between synchronous and asynchronous instruction, please click here for an explanation and helpful examples. We expect to have daily schedules for the entire first quarter, by grade level, available to families next week. Please go to pps.net/fall2020 for the latest updates on the opening of the school year and answers to frequently asked questions. In the meantime, we hope you stay healthy and enjoy the last days of summer break. Portland Public Schools recognizes the diversity and worth of all individuals and groups and their roles in society. It is the policy of the Portland Public Schools Board of Education that there will be no discrimination or harassment of individuals or groups on the grounds of age, color, creed, disability, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex or sexual orientation in any educational programs, activities or employment.

Great news!!! You and one or two other WEB Leaders will be paired with a 6th-grade class where you will have a chance to share a fond memory you have of 6th grade, give pointers on how to be successful in middle school, and answer any questions they may have. Please arrive to Google Meets on time or even a little early. We need everyone present to get ready for the big day for 6th graders.

Dear PPS Families,
As you know, Portland Public Schools will begin the school year with Comprehensive Distance Learning until at least November 5 (see pps.net/fall2020 for details). The Nutrition Services department will continue to offer onsite meal distribution. We want to update you on our plans to provide meals for students during this time.
Our summer meal service ends Thursday, August 20, and we will restart meal service on the first day of the new school year, Wednesday, September 2:
- Where: Meals will be available for pickup outside 38 schools. Click here to see the full list of schools/sites.
- When: Mondays and Wednesdays, 3 to 5 p.m.
- Other details: Students will receive five days’ worth of meals each week. On Monday, they will get breakfast and lunch for Monday and Tuesday; on Wednesday, they will get meals for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
For families not near a meal pickup location or who need assistance accessing meals, we will be offering an additional service: home delivery of school meals. Nutrition Services will partner with PPS Transportation to deliver breakfasts and lunches directly to homes. If you would like to request a home delivery of meals, please fill out this online form. Please note that deliveries may vary based on the number of requests, and each drop-off may include several days’ worth of meals.
Pickup and delivery of school meals will be free to those eligible for free or reduced lunch, or any student enrolled in a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school (see the Nutrition Services’ Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage for eligibility information).
For families not eligible for free or reduced meals, each breakfast will cost $1.50, and each lunch will cost $2.90. Families must reapply every school year for free or reduced-priced meals and may apply at any time during the school year.
We will have more information on this, along with an updated list of CEP schools for 2020-21, in the coming days. If you have questions, please contact us at nutritionservices@pps.net or call 503-916-3399.
We look forward to continuing to serve your students this coming school year!

Beaumont Parents for Racial Equity
Here are a few resources and opportunities:
- If any of you missed the online panel discussion Parenting In Support of Black Lives a few weeks ago, I highly encourage watching/listening. Also, if you didn't catch Nicole Hannah-Jones's recent piece on reparations in NYT magazine, it's worth your time.
- NPR's Code Switch podcast recently had an episode discussing collective psychology of the pandemic and its relationship to the uprisings, especially for white people. For those of us who identify as white, it raises deep reflective questions about our authentic commitment to racial equity work.
- Pacific Education Group-- creators of Courageous Conversations framework & protocol-- has a series of online courses available this summer (most classes are 2 hours and cost $50).
