Message from the Assistant Principal
Greetings Pandas! This month your student will be working on the character trait of honesty. Sometimes it is difficult to be honest in our actions, words and thoughts with others and with ourselves. This month we will focus on honesty as a form of self-care. We owe ourselves the honor of being honest with how we feel so that we can manage our stress. Students, believe it or not, hold a lot of stress especially with the end of the semester and the holidays approaching. How often do we answer we are fine after someone asks how we are doing even though we aren’t? Passively brushing off our true feelings is a lot easier than stating the truth; however, it serves us to be true to ourselves. Set aside time to check in with each other as a family. Ask each family member, “How are you feeling today?” and practice answering honestly and listening intently to the response. Allow the family member to explain their answer when asked “tell me more about that. Why do you feel that way?” This will ensure that the family member is challenged to verbalize their true feelings while others model the value of listening fully to validate their feelings.
Panda Proud,
Celeste Myres

MY CHILD HAS AN EXCUSE FOR EVERYTHING!
Have you ever said or thought that?
Making excuses may seem innocent at first. It’s not exactly fun to face punishment or consequences, so children concoct excuses to escape them.
“It’s not my fault!” or “It wasn’t me!” is their usual response.
If not addressed early, however, this shirking of personal responsibility can become a chronic problem later in life.
Our job as parents is to prepare our children for the real world—and the real world doesn’t accept excuses.
So let’s talk about explaining responsibility to a child in a way that empowers them to own up to their mistakes and graciously accept their responsibilities.
1. IDENTIFY THE ROOT CAUSES OF AVOIDANCE
2. KEEP YOUR COOL: ADMONISH AND ENCOURAGE
3. CULTIVATE A PROPER PERSPECTIVE OF MISTAKES
4. LET THEM SEE YOU BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE
5. CLARIFY EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
6. ENFORCE CONSEQUENCES CONSISTENTLY
7. ENCOURAGE OWNERSHIP BY ADDRESSING THE HEART
8. PRACTICE PROBLEM SOLVING
9. ENGAGE IN PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY ACTIVITIES

News From Nurse Lindsey
Attention Parents of 5th Grade Girls Only:
Nurse Lindsey will be conducting spinal screening on 12/8/22 checking for
abnormal curves of the spine. Scoliosis, a common spinal abnormality found in adolescents, is a
sideways twisting of the spine. It is usually detected in children between 10 and 14 years of age.
Kyphosis, sometimes called round back, is an exaggerated rounding of the upper back and is
often confused with poor posture. Many cases of curvature of the spine are mild and require
only ongoing observation by a physician when they are first diagnosed. Others can worsen with
time as the child grows and require active treatment such as bracing and surgery. Early treatment
can prevent the development of a severe deformity, which can affect a person’s appearance and
health.
The procedure for screening is simple. Screeners who have been specially trained (typically the
school nurse) will look at your child’s back while she stands and then bends forward. For this
examination, girls will be seen separately.
ALL STUDENTS MUST REMOVE THEIR SHIRT FOR THIS EXAM. GIRLS MAY
WEAR A FITTED TANK TOP, SPORTS BRA, OR A TWO PIECE SWIMSUIT TOP
UNDERNEATH THEIR SHIRT ON EXAM DAY Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022.
Parents will be notified of the results of the screening only if professional follow-up is necessary.
This screening procedure does not replace your child’s need for regular health care and check-
ups.
According to law, all girls in grade 5 are required to be screened. If, for religious reasons, you
do not wish to have your child screened, you are to submit an affidavit of exemption to this
office no later than 12/6/22.
