Two Hood River Valley High School students won spots in the National Speech and Debate competition to be held June 12-17 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Senior Darrian Thomas will compete in International Extemporaneous speaking, an event where participants research current events prior to the competition. At the competition, each person receives a topic about a current event, and then has 30 minutes to write a seven minute speech about the topic.
Sophomore Ruby Patterson will compete in Original Oratory, an event where students write a 10 minute long persuasive speech on any topic of their choosing.
The National Speech and Debate Association hosts the annual competition, which is the largest academic competition in the country. Students qualify to go to Nationals by winning at a regional District tournament. The Hood River team competed at the University of Oregon, March 11-12th.
The NSDA tournaments are separate from the OSAA system. Hood River will host the OSAA District 9 tournament on April 2nd and hope to send several students to the State tournament later in April.
In order to attend the National tournament, Thomas and Patterson will be raising money to support their travel and hotel expenses. A Go Fund Me site has been set up and their teammates will support them with a carwash later this spring.

HRVHS Community and Campus Pride Work Day April 27, 2016
This year marks our 19th year of doing Community Work Day. This year we are organizing the event a bit differently. Students will still be working for sponsors in the community who hire them at the usual $50 for five hours of work; this year, however, the money raised will be used to offset the cost of student-led HRVHS campus beautification projects. Another change will be that students will have the opportunity to volunteer and do work to help clean up and do landscaping in areas of our school that need it. We are calling this, “Pridifying” our school. Staff and volunteers will be supervising students who choose to participate at school. Classes will be taught and run on a regular schedule for those not able to participate. If you would like to sponsor a student for $50 for five hours of work, please contact Wendy Herman at 541-387-5034 ext. 1.

Senioritis
PARENTS: Watch Out for 2nd Semester “SENIORITIS”
Seniors should be receiving acceptance letters from colleges any day now, which will outline subsequent steps for final acceptance. One of the steps includes a request from the college asking for the student’s final transcripts. The College Freshmen Admissions Advisors are alerted to keep an eye out for students who do not meet the second semester requirements (i.e. needed course work dropped and poor grades--C-/D grades are not accepted anymore). Translation: colleges can rescind offers of acceptance if your grades take a nosedive. If you have dropped academic courses for 2nd semester, be sure to notify your colleges or universities. Do not wait for them to discover it on your eight semester transcript which must be sent in June 2016.
