Language Arts
Students will continue to work on using “The Fab Four” comprehension strategy and will now use them to comprehend fictional stories. “The Fab Four” have students make predictions about the text, question what they read, clarify what might not be understood, and summarize the text. We will also focus on identifying the elements in a story (character, setting, problem, solution and beginning, middle and end events) in order to retell key story events.
We will continue to work on our narrative writing unit. Students will continue to write a new small moment story of their lives with a strong hook, details and powerful endings. They will continue to explore how to edit their writing for errors and revise writing and word choice to ensure it makes sense. Students will also work on achieving the writing goals they created for themselves.
The pattern we will be focusing on will be long e patterns and review of all long vowel patterns. Students will work on applying the patterns learned in writing and reading.
Thank you to the families that continue to read each night at home. The continued practice helps your students build their reading stamina and comprehension skills.
Math
Our lessons will focus on fluently adding and subtracting within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations and/or relationships between addition and subtraction. We will also apply strategies to solve one step word problems. Be on the look out for a packet coming home that shares the strategies we are using in class. Students must be able to explain their thinking using words, objects, drawings and equations. We will also focus on telling time to the five minute on a digital and analog clock.
Continue to review math facts each night and you can practice the concepts learned in class on TenMarks and FrontRow.
