The Wallace Wildcat
Hoboken, NJ
DEAR WALLACE SCHOOL PARENTS AND GUARDIANS,
Teachers Appreciation Week was celebrated every day this week here at 1100 Willow Ave. Students and families found creative and thoughtful ways to show how much they appreciate the hardworking teachers here at Wallace School. Flowers, candy, baked goods, and an amazing feast sponsored by the PTO made sure our teachers had the energy to stay focused on the work ahead. Our teachers were touched by the love and affection shown by our children and families alike. It was truly a sight to be seen.

Third Grade
Students are continuing to learn the writing process and completed spring writing “Look How We Have Grown” which is displayed in our hallway. In math students are working on multi-step word problems with multiplication and division.
Fourth Grade
This week our 4th Grade students are wrapping up the novel, “ Jim and Me.” A fantasy with non-fiction elements about two boys who travel back through time and meet the famous Jim Thorpe but are faced with many bumps along the way!
Students created theme boards based off of the theme they thought was best in the book, “Jim and Me.” They created theme boards in Google Slides and added pictures and words to represent the theme. Students shared their theme board with the class upon completion.
This week the 4th Graders are continuing how to find the estimated product of two digit multiplication problems by using a variety of mental math strategies. They are doing a great job establishing techniques that allow them to solve real world math problems without using a pencil and paper. The children are also learning how to find products of two digit numbers by breaking the numbers apart in multiples of ten.
Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month
May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is observed annually in May to celebrate the contributions that generations of AAPIs have made to American history, society, and culture. The theme for the observance of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May 2021 is Advancing Leaders Through Purpose-Driven Service. The 4th graders have been learning about Hawaii and its diverse culture. Students are creating brochures with facts about Hawaii.Fifth Grade
In readers workshop we have continued to explore themes related to the concept of identity. Scholars closely read and analyzed Part 1 of the novel Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, as well as paired poems and thought deeply about how identity is forged. This week we focused on evaluating how the structural elements of a poem build on one another to develop meaning. As writers we have worked diligently to craft our own personal memoirs, written using poetic structure, to express what identity means to us and/or reveal memories that helped forge our own identities. We cannot wait to write the final poems and begin putting our memoir together next week.
In science we further developed our scientific knowledge by reviewing changes that occur to matter. On Thursday and Friday we concluded our exploration of patterns that are caused by interactions between Earth, the sun, and stars.
As historians we evaluated and explained what culture is by analyzing the different elements of culture. Scholars then created their own personal culture maps and began to explore Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage/culture. Our scholars ended the week by creating the criteria for the project we will begin Monday.
What a great week in fifth grade! It was wonderful seeing all of their smiling faces as they took their school photos!
Lastly, we would like to wish a very Happy Mother’s Day to all!

Ms. McGeehin's Art on a Cart
Fourth and fifth graders have been learning about careers in art, and for this latest project our focus was jewelry design. This week each student designed and created their own unique pin from polymer clay!

NJIT eSTEM Competition
Students from various Hoboken Public School District elementary schools participated in the first annual eSTEM competition hosted by NJIT. The students were given a scenario of living in the future where we need to rely on renewable resources to do everyday things. Their challenge was to design and build a solar oven that did not rely on any external heat sources and would be able to heat up its contents.
The students learned about and engaged in the Engineering Design Process throughout the competition. They worked as a team to solve this problem by asking questions, thinking of ideas, making plans, testing their plans, and working to make it better. Over the course of their meetings, students maintained an Engineering Logbook to record their ideas, data and reflections. One of the focuses of the competition was to reflect on their progress, ideas, and how to improve, not only their device but also how they work together as a team.

In the next coming weeks we are emphasizing and teaching lessons on online safety, using the Common Sense Digital Citizenship curriculum. With more and more of our students and children using technology, it is so important now more than ever that we teach them to safely and responsibly navigate their technology and increase their online literacy. I encourage everyone to talk about online safety and the importance of protecting our information using the resources from MOVE THIS WORLD and the Common Sense Digital Citizenship website.
