Hoboken High School Weekly Update
#redwingway
Happy Friday! I hope everyone had an amazing and productive week.
This past week both our onsite and remote students in grades 9 -11 took part in our LinkIt! assessment in both ELA and Mathematics. This assessment is not a new assessment so students are familiar with the online platform. Students will take this assessment over the course of the year 3 times to measure their growth in New Jersey Student Learning Standards(NJSLS). Our curriculum is aligned to the NJSLS and through the data collected we are able to assess student mastery of the standards. It provides insight to administration and teachers, identifying areas that require more in depth instruction. Our remote students must understand that at some point this year we are confident you will return to school, and this data will be utilized upon your return. Please set aside 2 hours to complete these assessments if you have not already done so.
This week we celebrated Digital Citizenship Week at Hoboken High School. All students are using technology and the goal of this week (and every week) is teaching students how to learn, create, and participate responsibly in the digital world. Mrs. McGreivey is our champion of this initiative and she worked with faculty to create schoolwide lessons appropriate for high school students. The picture at top right is Mr. Lebegue's class engaging with a digital citizenship video and discussion about curating our online profile. We work with Common Sense Education on this and throughout the year to continually stress the importance of being a good digital citizen. Mrs. McGreivey also worked with students during lunch to create buttons that students can wear advertising their digital awareness.
I have to share that our students have been doing an excellent job at wearing their masks and adhering to all our precautionary measures in the day of COVID-19. I also want to thank those students who "say something when they see something." We are in this together, and it is important to note that our continued adherence to mask wearing and social distancing is a key in remaining healthy.
As you know, every freshman at HHS is enrolled in Project Lead The Way Introduction to Engineering. This week we began entering the design stage and students built vehicles using only the given materials. Students created two prototypes to see which one of their designs was more aerodynamic and would land the furthest. See some of our students in action in the photos below.
Last but certainly not least, the entire faculty and student body participated in a Pink Out today at HHS. Everyone put on their pink and also donated to Breast Cancer Research. Thanks to Mr. Munoz and the senior class for organizing this event and raising money for such an important cause.
All the best,
Ms. Picc
Guidance Department
A big congratulations to Eliza Santiago, Gina Cruz, Suhailey Gonzalez, Glenn Galapon, and Asher Strell for their acceptance into the Art Harper Saturday Academy (AHSA) at Stevens Institute of Technology! The core elements of the academy are a math course, a project design course, and college prep workshops. Students will gain knowledge of the different STEM careers and majors, and will be given learning opportunities to use that knowledge and apply it to find solutions to real-world problems.
Our guidance department held their annual FAFSA Night on Thursday night. Offered both in person and via video conference, counselors reviewed the financial aid process, common pitfalls and questions, and helped those who attended in person with filling out the form. Seniors and parents/guardians of seniors are strongly encouraged to get the FAFSA done as soon as possible. Ms. Wiener is available for assistance, and will be holding another event during the school day soon. Last night's slideshow is available as a link below. Please read all emails from guidance counselors carefully for important and time sensitive information.
Next week's college visits are listed below. Students can sign up in Naviance to receive a pass to attend.

- Seton Hall University

Athletics
Last week, Boys Soccer lost two extremely close games to North Bergen and McNair. Meanwhile, Girls Soccer lost a game in overtime to Union City and had another game postponed due to weather. Football defeated rival Lincoln High School convincingly with a score of 48-6.
Winter sports are approaching and as of now our plan is to move forward with them, pending guidance from the Governor's Office and NJSIAA. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.
