Art Action with Mr. Daniel
Third grade artists are wrapping up their "Patriotic Spheres." These are part of our Veterans Day Art Exhibit. These students are learning how to apply the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design to the production of excellent works of art.
Fourth grade artists are using their creative ability and the Principles of Linear Perspective to develop an American Flag Wall in Perspective. These awesome compositions are a part of our Veterans Day exhibit as well.
Fifth grade artists are also honoring our veterans with the project, "Our Veterans Are Superheroes." We're taking an Andy Warhol (Pop Art) approach to the development of these superb compositions. These works of art will also be displayed in our Veterans Day Exhibit.
Notes with Nurse Julia
All 5th grade students will be screened for Scoliosis (curvature of the spine)
on November 8th
~The purpose of the screening is to recognize any deviation from normal so the need for treatment can be determined. The procedure is simple; the screener will observe your child’s posture while standing and while bending forward. If scoliosis is suspected you will be notified to receive further evaluation from his/her doctor.
~Please remind your child to wear a loose fitting shirt that can be pulled up easily, so their back can be seen. If a fitted compression shirt or camisole is worn under clothing it will not need to be removed.
~If you do not wish for your child to be screened at school, please send a note to the school nurse indicating that your child will be screened by his/her primary physician.
The Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
During the month of October, guidance lessons focused on safety and healthy choices. Third and fifth grade classes received the new Erin Law’s Prevention Education. Fourth grade classes focused on bullying strategies and refusal skills for negative peer pressure. Please ask your children to share what they learned with you. As parents, it is vital that you openly express your safety expectations with your children. I am also stressing that you, as parents, make sure your children know their full address and a contact number of at least one parent; this is also a big component of safety.
In November we fill focus on self-esteem and relationships. Self-esteem is important because it affects one’s behaviors and thoughts. Self-esteem impacts one’s life and choices. Parents can help boost their children’s self-esteem by helping them look for good role models, helping them focus on achievements not failures, setting reachable goals, and smiling and walking with confidence. Talk with your children about keeping a good attitude even when bad things happen in life. Be that “example” that your child wants to grow up and be like.

Yarbrough fifth graders will begin their drop project. Their task will be to build their own container that will safely drop an egg from 8 feet, working their way up to 15 feet. For their practice drops, they will use a golf ball and learn to revise their containers based on the results. Groups will chart and graph their data which will then be used in upcoming 5th grade math classes.
The Computer Lab Latest with Miss Ball
The students will be “cursor cruising” in the computer lab. Cursor cruising will help the students learn how to navigate their cursor in order to revise and edit more effectively. Students will also be working on Mobymax. It is an outstanding online resource that offers skill practice and instruction in math, language, science, and reading. The lessons are aligned with the Common Core Standards, as well.

Leader Lessons and Manner of the Month
November Habit and Manner Focus:
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Key Phrase: Listen Before You Talk
What this habit looks like in action: I listen to other peoples' ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoints. I listen to others without interrupting. I am confident in voicing my ideas. I look people in the eyes when talking
Habit 6: Synergize
Key Phrase: Together Is Better
What this habit looks like in action: I value other peoples' strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different than me. I work well in groups. I seek out other peoples' ideas to solve problems, because I know that by teaming with others we can create better solutions than any one of us can alone. I am humble.
Manner Focus: Say “excuse me” when you bump into someone, when you interrupt two people talking, or when you need someone’s attention.
