9th Grade News
from the CNHS Counseling Center: October 2016
Class of 2020 Bull Dogs!
9th graders are almost 1/4 of the way done with freshman year!
1st 9 Week Grades
The 1st 9 weeks ends on October 7th and 9 week grades will be finalized by October 20th.
We do not mail report cards home, so make sure to log in to Parent Portal to see the 1st 9 week grades. If you do not have Parent Portal login information, please contact Michelle Williams in the main office at williamsm@bcsc.k12.in.us.
The 1st 9 week grade will combine with the 2nd 9 week grade (and possibly a final exam) to create the semester grade. The semester grade is the final grade that determines if a student earns credit in a class. The student will earn credit if the semester grade is a D- or higher. This is also the grade that will go on the transcript.

Preparing for Life After High School
Before you know it, current 9th graders will be applying to colleges, applying for scholarships, signing with recruiters and accepting job offers! They are already more than 6% done with high school!
Two very important things 9th graders can do right now to make sure they will have many opportunities after high school are:
- Come to school EVERY DAY. We understand that sometimes students must miss school. However, it is very important to make an effort to be at school every day. When students miss school, not only are they missing out on valuable classroom instruction, but then they are also behind on homework which can be stressful and overwhelming.
- Do ALL homework and submit it ON TIME! Zeros absolutely destroy semester grades. If a student is not already in the daily routine of doing homework and studying, now is the time to develop that habit!
LearnMore Indiana provides helpful college and career resources to our students each year. Please see the following link to see this year's 9th and 10th grade guide!

Struggling with a Class?
All classes, including electives, can earn students credits toward graduation. It is important to realize how critical these credits are to identify early on if a student needs academic assistance.
If a student is struggling in a class, the first place to go for help is the classroom teacher. Often times teachers have time before or after school to help students. Other options to consider when struggling with a class:
- Ask Rose Homework Hotline: Check out askrose.org or call 1-877-ASK-ROSE. This is a free resource for students who need help with math or science.
- Hire a BCSC approved tutor: Click here for the 2015-2016 tutor list
- Consider asking your counselor if you could change your resource teacher to someone who teaches in the content area you are struggling with.
- If you feel you are in an incorrect level of a math or English class, discuss a possible level change with your teacher and counselor.
These resources and others are available on itsLearning. Students can log in and access this information at any time!
Lunch and Textbook Assistance Program
It's more than lunch!
Did you know that the meal assistance program is not just about lunch? If your family meets the income qualifications for free or reduced lunch, and even if your child brings his or her lunch to school, there are several benefits that may be available for your family including: textbook assistance, ACT/SAT/PSAT/AP test fee waivers, and college application fee waivers.Click here to access this information on the BCSC website.
You must reapply each year unless you have received a Direct Certification notice letter for the current school year.
APPLICATIONS should be submitted to the Main Office
