March 2022 Newsletter
Dear Rainier Families,
Spring marks the beginning of nature’s replenishment, renewal and growth. We look forward to longer days, more sunshine, flowers blooming and birds chirping. Along with the promise of warmer temperatures, we also get to look forward to many upcoming events.
This month, we are pleased to have several exciting events for students and staff to enjoy. Please review this newsletter for details. We are also thrilled to begin preparations for the 22-23 school year. Kindergarten enrollment is now open and we are eager to meet our incoming Rainiers. This is also the time of year we are asking families to share with us their intent to return for the next school year. More information is shared in this newsletter.
Students in our Hands-on-Health class have already begun planning the school spring garden beds. We are eager for warmer weather to grow crops and plan to invite families to harvest vegetables.
Enjoy the upcoming spring season.
Take Care,
Allison Shew

Meet our new Elementary Mental Health Counselor
My name is Ms. Elle and I have the privilege to be the Eatonville School District Elementary Mental Health Therapist! I will be heading to the three elementary schools: Weyerhaeuser Elementary School, Eatonville Elementary School and Columbia Crest Academy.
I have a background in psychology, human development, social work and various forms of behavioral modification intervention (ABA). This wide variety of knowledge creates an open mind full of ideas to create best practice for kiddos, along with the educational background to create a solution focused environment. With that, I am both excited and eager to work collaboratively with parents. If you have any concerns and would like me to meet with your student please don't hesitate to contact me at e.gladstone@eatonvilleschools.org
I look forward to meeting your awesome kiddos!
Highly Capable Program Highlight
February Highlight
This month elementary had two themed Highly Capable days. The first session was a Valentine's theme. We practiced data collection and different math calculations (like mean, median, etc.) with a sweetheart candy stacking challenge. We also learned about prepositions with a hands-on activity with Cupid and paper airplanes.
It's always a good day when we get to hike down to Sahara Creek and in our first session we escaped outside to check our water testing site for the Nisqually River Education Project (NREP). In the afternoon, students worked on their posters and "pitch" for their passion project. We began finalizing our ideas and making our goals and timelines.
For the second elementary session, we did a Winter Olympics day. Students were split into teams and created their own countries and flags that represented their groups. Then, teams competed in engineering challenges based on Olympic events like speed skating to learn about center of gravity and bobsledding to test drag on different bobsled teams. In the afternoon students worked on the last part of preparing their passion project presentations and finished the day with choice time.
In our one middle school session, we spent the morning hiking to the Nisqually River and Sahara Creek and collecting water samples and other data. We went back to the makerspace and tested our samples to ensure our testing sites were healthy. We will report our data to the NREP to help them plan future watershed clean up projects. In the afternoon, students presented their pitches and posters for their passion projects. Kids were engaged and asked insightful questions to help each other find areas that needed work and expressed shared interest in ideas.

Read Across America, March 2nd
Read Across America, the nation’s largest celebration of reading, is a year-round program designed to encourage children and teens to read.
This year, Read Across America Day is March 2, 2022. We are excited for students and staff to wear their pajamas, bring their favorite book and enjoy a cozy afternoon as we hold our annual Read-In.

Classified Appreciation Week March 14-18

Happy First Day of Spring, March 20th
Student Council News
The Student Council is happy to report that they are supporting reading by offering incentives for passing Accelerated Reader comprehension tests. Many students earned points and were happy to get to choose prizes chosen by other students for them. In all 125 prizes were given out for points earned. Twelve students have now reached the 100 point level and are in the “Go for the Gold” category for the bigger prizes that will be given at the end of the year.
The Student Council AR Committee presented their ideas for making reading more exciting and were awarded a $500 grant from the Graham Rotary Club to fund prizes.
The Student Council is planning more ways to be creative for the month of March. And of course, we could not forget Dr. Seuss with a “read in”! Wear pajamas and bring a favorite book. If dressing as a book character is more your style that is an option.
Thanks to all who helped make the Valentine’s celebrations fun and festive. Student Council discussed how to create events that are both inclusive and memorable.
Student Council members participated in Random Act of Kindness Day and are sharing favorite books with elementary classes showing off their oral reading skills. Lots to do in February!
Watch for news of our March theme “Donut let any page go unread” as the students continue to encourage other students to read!
