A Note From the Principal
Dear Hixson Families,
When folks ask me what I do, most often the response is “I don’t know how you do it. The hormones, the attitude…I couldn’t do it.” The truth is I think the middle school years are the most underestimated and overlooked because of the hormones and attitude. Yet, I think it’s the most magical of years because of the hormones and attitude. I’ve spent the greater part of my adult life with middle schoolers and been witness to countless amazing moments where they have shined and modeled the greatest of humanity. Earlier this week, a group of middle schoolers from California received some attention for saving the life of a woman. Their compassion and care for a complete stranger in crisis demonstrates just what middle school kids are capable of. This national recognition of middle schoolers was a huge win for kids across the country and for one moment, it cancelled out all the other moments of frustration that sometimes comes with teaching and parenting this age group. Our kids are experiencing some pretty big changes physically, emotionally and sometimes socially while balancing school and navigating the pressures that accompany adolescence. It’s important to remember this, especially now as we enter the last 7 weeks or so of school! In addition to the normal shifts of adolescence, we are also balancing the excitement that comes with warmer temperatures and the prospect of summer break. It’s the time of year where teachers, administrators and parents become broken records and continually remind kids that school is not over yet and there is still so much to learn! We have a lot on the horizon and teachers will update you through their team memos. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your teachers or administrators if you have any questions. We are also working on being more diligent about posting kids in action on our FB page. Please follow the Hixson page for visual updates that will help you catch a glimpse of what kids are doing during the day.
With gratitude,
Grace
