Student Woodworking Competition
You can now register your school for the 2015 Fresh Wood student woodworking competition! The entry deadline is May 1, 2015 and there is NO fee for entry!
The competition, which will be showcased at the 2015 AWFS®Fair, July 22-25, in Las Vegas, Nevada, is open to high school and post-secondary students in accredited woodworking or related programs.
AWFS® has announced a new Special Theme category for the competition. The Special Theme category topic will vary with each competition; the 2015 theme of Musical Instruments is based on the overwhelming popularity of stringed musical instruments in the 2013 competition. Any musical instrument primarily made of wood is eligible, excluding pre-made kits.
In addition, the production-focused entry category has been revamped and renamed to Design for Production. Entrants must promote their concepts through a marketing-themed entry essay and finalist illustration board, addressing topics such as price point, efficient production methods and market intent.
Four other entry categories round out the Fresh Wood competition: case goods, chairs, tables, "open". Judges’ scores will determine the finalist pieces that will be on display at the AWFS®Fair in Las Vegas. AWFS® covers shipping and the majority of costs to bring students and their teachers to the Fair for the final round.
Winners will be identified and announced at the AWFS®Fair. First place, second place and honorable mention awards may be given out in each category and at each school level. A “Best of Show” award will also be selected from all first place winners. A People’s Choice award, for which all AWFS®Fair attendees and exhibitors have the opportunity to vote, will also be given.
How to enter:
- Read the Fresh Wood Contest Rules and Information
- Register your school (and request free posters!)
- Students Enter (deadline May 1, 2015)
Questions? Contact Adria Torrez at (323) 215-0311 or adria@awfs.org
AWFS® is proud to partner with the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) to introduce the Turning to the Future competition and juried exhibit, to showcase student woodturning. The competition is open to high school and post-secondary students in art, design, or trade programs. The finalist pieces will be on display at the AWFS®Fair, July 22-25, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada, adjacent to the Fresh Wood student woodworking competition.
The competition is open to all forms of turning, with the exception of furniture making. Projects must be at least partially made with a lathe and should be 20” or less in diameter. A distinct panel of professional woodturners will act as judges and cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third prize at both school levels, sponsored by Woodcraft. All winners will receive an AAW symposium scholarship and have their work featured in the American Woodturner journal.
The entry deadline is May 1, 2015 and there is NO entry fee. Finalists will be on display throughout the AWFS®Fair. Winners will identified and announced on Friday, July 24.
How to enter:
- Read the Turning to the Future Contest Rules and Information
- Register your school (NOTE: If also participating in Fresh Wood, you only have to register once/one form for both competitions.)
- Students Enter (separate entry form for each project)

Meet the New Face of Manufacturing
Request FREE posters for your program!
Meet the New Face of Manufacturing is a campaign which publicizes photos of young people who work in various capacities in the wood products manufacturing industry through the campaign. Our goal is to communicate to counselors, parents, students, teachers, administrators, legislators and others that 21st century manufacturing is bright, high-tech and it can even be hip. It is filled with a variety of careers that need filling!
A four-color, 11 x 17 poster is available for FREE to help spread the message. The poster has a QR code/web link that directs viewers to this web page filled with information on: special activities at the AWFS®Fair trade show for teachers and students; resources and job listing sites; resources for the classroom; and the wood industry’s Manufacturing Skill Standards. If you would like a copy, or as we like to suggest, copies to give to counselors or administrators at your school, send your request and mailing address to nancy@awfs.org.
Since this campaign launched in September, we have distributed over 1,000 posters to schools, companies, counselors and students and have received overwhelmingly positive feedback!
Photos needed! If you are in touch with any former students working in the industry who might want to participate, you can have them contact nancy@awfs.org. The more images and stories we have to draw on, the better. We hope to reach a wide variety of media sources with our message: MANUFACTURING PROVIDES GOOD JOBS WITH GOOD SALARIES. (NOTE: Manufacturing is a $2 billion economy just in California.)

SkillsUSA Week February 8-14, 2015 Celebrating our 50 Years!!!
**** We are making plans to visit the State House and meet with Congressional leaders- Keep a look out for further updates****
Make plans now for your chapter to celebrate SkillsUSA Week! SkillsUSA Week is February 8 – 14, 2015 and provides state associations, advisors and student members the opportunity to promote SkillsUSA programs and activities at the local and state levels.
During SkillsUSA week, members can also help raise awareness of SkillsUSA. This can be accomplished through field trips to local businesses, an open house for parents or industry partners, a visit to local community organizations to make a brief presentation about SkillsUSA, or providing news releases and public service announcements to local media outlets for possible distribution. Involvement in activities such as these brings positive recognition to SkillsUSA, and to local schools and their students.
Conducting chapter activities during SkillsUSA Week also helps to satisfy Chapter of Excellence Level 2 Indicators. For more information and ideas on celebrating SkillsUSA Week, check out http://skillsusa.org/events-training/skillsusa-week/ideas-for-celebrating/ .
