MEADOWLARK NEWSLETTER
JANUARY 2018
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Thank you so much for each families support of our many community outreach projects this past month. We were able to donate over 1200 non-perishable items to the Andover Food Bank. Additionally, due to your generosity, we had the opportunity to bless 18 Meadowlark families with gifts for 40 students as well as groceries for the families. It was so heartwarming to witness the fifth graders sorting, weighing, and stocking the food items at the food bank and to see pictures of fourth grade students shopping at Walmart for their fellow Meadowlark peers. Meadowlark is such a wonderful community!
- Fourth Grade and First Grade were winners of our food drive and earned a Dunkin Donuts party!
- Miss Hoopes and Mrs. Thompson's classes were our winners for the Holiday Giving Campaign and have earned a pizza party!
- The entire school will have the opportunity to wear their pajamas and have hot cocoa at lunch on Friday, January 5th due to meeting our buildings goal for the holiday campaign.
While the month of December was full of many fun and festive activities, our students also finished the semester off strong academically. Our STAR benchmark assessments for second, third, fourth, and fifth grade students showed much improvement in both the area of reading and in the area of math. Reports cards for the second nine weeks will be coming home in early January.
I hope that 2018 brings your family many blessings. Thank you for your continued support of our Meadowlark children.
Mrs. Dana Matheny

ANDOVER HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE
Helping with the Food Bank was a wonderful experience for the 5th graders of Meadowlark Elementary School.
First, we brought all the food from our school to the church across the street. Then, we checked the expiration date and for dents in can lids (dents on the side of the can were fine though). Next, we put the items by the right label. Then, we separated the items so that they would be with their own kind. For example, we separated the fruit into their own kind by putting the pineapple together, the oranges together and so on. Last, we took the different kinds of food and took it back to a room where they organize it by the different types of food. After all that work, we got a tour through the stockroom, the shopping room, and we got to learn more about the food bank.
It was adventurous!!!!!!

KINDERGARTEN MUSIC PROGRAM
The Meadowlark Kindergarten classes performed on Friday, December 8th in front of the entire school at the pep assembly. In addition to that, they performed for their families later that morning at 10:00 a.m. They went "Over the River and Through the Woods" and saw many friends along the way. They met Frosty, the Gingerbread Man, Suzy Snowflake and Rudolph to name a few. These students sang so well and looked very cute in their Santa hats and Reindeer shirts. A big thank you to the parent volunteers who helped get those painted. I am sure that was not an easy task but so worth it!
A special thank you to Principal Matheny, Mrs. Allison, Mrs. Finney, Mrs. Crusinberry, Mrs. Russo, Mrs. Harvey, Mrs. Huffman, Mr. Fred, Grandma Martha, Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Kear. We truly can't express how much we are thankful for all the teamwork that goes on to make these special events possible.
ART NEWS
December was a creative month for our Allstars! Third grade went to City Arts and we explored different processes of art-making like weaving, printmaking, mosaics, and plaster casting! The students were excited to apply what they learned on the trip and try it again in the Art room!
Cardboard has become a hot commodity in the art room! We are learning how to build and refine our projects. This medium is great for our 3D thinkers! As students are working with the material, they are learning a variety of ways to assemble and bring their visions to life!
"Inspiration is everywhere and is often in unexpected places; you just have to keep your eyes open." -Unknown
CIRCLE OF FRIENDS
Circle of Friends Buddies and Mentors gather to bring Christmas cheer to Meadowlark Elementary. The group went to each class in the building and sang Christmas carols to the teacher and students. The group even asked for special music requests from the classroom and got all the students to sing along.
HOLIDAYS AROUND THE WORLD
Holidays Around the World Open House was a huge success in fourth grade! The students worked really hard on projects that showed how countries around the world celebrated different holidays. The students baked goodies, made crafts, and brought in decorations that were special to their country. They researched facts about the holiday and created a presentation. They then shared their presentation with parents, teachers, and students. The students learned a lot throughout the project and really enjoyed sharing it with everyone!
SANTA VISIT
Tuesday, December 19th, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students were very pleasantly surprised when the "Jolly 'ol Man" himself showed up to read them the story "The Night Before Christmas". Santa gave each student a candy cane and took time to pose with each kindergarten student for a picture.
