Lenape M. S. Smoke Signals
December 7, 2016
Special Persons' Day
On Friday, December 16, Lenape will continue the tradition of welcoming local senior citizens to our middle school. Lenape students will perform a concert for our guests and then serve them lunch and join them for conversation. Lenape is very proud of this tradition, and we encourage all students to “dress up” on this day so we can look our best for those visiting our school.
Gift of Giving
Lenape 7th graders participated in a holiday gift project throughout the month of November. Students worked in teams with their classmates to fundraise, and used that money to purchase gifts for the Family Services Association of Bucks County - Gift of Giving project. In all, the students raised nearly $4,000 and bought a wide variety of presents for families in the Bucks County region. The gifts ranged from electric scooters, to Kindle tablets, bicycles, toys and games, clothing, toiletries, arts and craft supplies, stuffed animals, gift cards and athletic equipment. In a culminating celebration, the students were able to see the piles of gifts they amassed and experience the joy that comes from doing for others.
Family Service Association of Bucks County helped 1,250 families during the 2015 holiday season. More information about Family Service visit www.fsabc.org

Updating Census Verification - Online
The Census Verification Form for 2016-17 school year has gone paperless. It is important to access your parent portal to update telephone numbers, emergency contacts, email address, and any change in household. The nurse needs permission from the parent to administer Tylenol and Ibuprofen, and without this update, our school nurse will not be able to give your student/s medication. This information is for school use only, and all information stays confidential. If you do not have access to a computer, please call Guidance at 267-893-2810 for assistance. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Attendance Procedures
Just a reminder that if your student will be absent from school, please call the Attendance line at 267-893-2820 and leave a message with the student's last name, first name, homeroom teacher, and reason for the absence. Please do not leave a message to dismiss your student early - that requires a note for the student to bring to the front office with a dismissal time and a reason for leaving early. Also, please do not email a note to your student's homeroom teacher about leaving school early.
If your student is not feeling well, texting the parent is not the procedure we would like our students to follow. We have a school nurse available, and the student should be seen by the nurse, and the nurse will call home if needed.
Please be mindful with the winter weather of rain and/or snow. Students that are being driven to school, homeroom starts at 7:30 AM. The drop off line can be rather long. If your student is not in homeroom by 7:30, they will be tardy unexcused. Please allow yourself enough time to drop off your student. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Two things needs to be completed and all information can be found on Lenape's Athletic Website:
1. Players need to register on Family ID
2. Players need to have a completed physical form. the physical must have a date of June 1, 2016 or after OR if players have played a sport in the fall, they need a recertification form with a parent signature - which is Section 7 of the PIAA physical form.

Program Planning
The Program Planning process for course selection for 2017-18 has begun. Students will be attending grade level assemblies to learn detailed information about the process. They will meet with teachers and guidance counselors to review recommendations and course options. Current 9th and 7th grade students will be involved in this process during the month of January. For 8th grade, the process does not begin until early February. All students will bring home verification sheets listing course requests so parents can review and discuss these choices with their child before anything is finalized.
A few important dates to be aware of for 9th grade:
January 4th, 9th grade students are introduced to the high school schedule and program planning process during an assembly in school.
January 5th - MBIT Open House for parents and students 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM.
January 12th, 6:30 PM - Curriculum Fair at CB West for current 9th grade students and their parents.
Please contact your Guidance Office if you have any questions. Again, additional information will be provided for all grade levels in the coming weeks.
7th Grade Students & Immunizations
All students in Grade 7 are required to have documentation of a Meningitis Vaccine and Adult booster Tdap Vaccine. If you have not provided that documentation to the Nurse’s Office, please do so as soon as possible. If your child has not yet received these vaccines, please send in the date of the immunizations as soon as they are completed. You may check your child’s immunization status on the parent portal, under the “Health” tab. These are mandates of the State of Pennsylvania. Students who do not have these immunizations on file will be excluded on May 1, 2017. A reminder letter was sent home earlier this year and another one will be sent again after we return to school following the winter break.
Thank you, in advance, for providing the required documentation.

FROM THE NURSE'S OFFICE
There are steps you can take in your daily life to help protect you from getting the flu.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with your hands. Germs spread this way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- Practice good health habits. Get plenty of sleep and exercise, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat healthy food.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- If you do not have a tissue, cough into your elbow or the fabric of your clothing.
- If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine.
BOX TOPS
YES, Lenape collects Box Tops! Our life skills class uses Box top activities to reinforce skill development. Lenape earns money for every label collected.
Please send your Box Tops to school labeled "Lenape Guidance" or drop them in the box in the lobby adjacent to the main office. Please don't worry about cutting the labels, tearing them off is fine.
