Sherman Eagles Weekly Update
October 2nd - October 6th
Level Up! Week 8
Greetings Sherman Elementary Faculty and Staff,
I hope everyone had a restful weekend and you are excited as I am that our defending World Champion Houston Astros are headed back to the playoffs and the Texans also got a dominant win on Sunday! Thank you to Mr. S for a wonderful Ballet Folklorico event Friday. The students did a phenomenal job performing. Thank you for your patience during MAP testing the past two weeks. We have concluded MAP testing but Kinder and First are still testing Dibles/Lectura this week and PK is continuing Circle Testing.
There will be a change this week for staff that leaves during the instructional day. Moving forward if anyone needs to leave during their lunch or any other time, you must come to the main office and you will sign out the gate key. You will then go to the gate, unlock it, drive out and then close the gate and lock it behind you. When you return you will open and unlock the gate, drive in, and then lock the gate behind you. Finally, you will return the key to the main office.
Thank you to our SDMC Members for participating in our meeting last week. We discussed the Principal and Assistant Principal evaluation system. Also thank you everyone for your flexibility and patience for our grandparents luncheon. It was a great event and our families were appreciative to eat lunch with their students.
Tutorials begin Monday October 2nd and will be for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students only. We will start tutorials for the lower grades in January, if we have the funds. Due to our shortfall in students, we cannot start tutorials for lower grades at this time. If you are in the lower grades and would like to tutor let me know and we can put you down as a sub for teachers who are not able to stay on their designated days this semester.
All teachers should have download your class QR codes through Clever and given a copy to Ms. Hernandez in the computer lab and put another copy in your sub tubs ASAP. Please submit QR codes by Monday afternoon if you have not done so.
Please continue to update your communication logs. They will be due in at the end of Cycle 1, which is this Friday October 6th.
We will have PLC Wednesday in Ms. Flores' office where we will be discussing LO's and DOL's. For PLC this week, all teachers need to print and bring their LO's and DOL's for the remainder of this week (October 2- 6). Our Executive Director Mrs. Perez will be facilitating PLC this week.
Important Reminders:
- RTI letters are due
- When taking students to recess please have them pick up their trash (masks, water bottles, hoodies, etc.)
- Tutorials begin this week
- Update data trackers with MAP BOY data
Please be reminded the 30 minute recess break includes transition time outside and restroom breaks after recess. All classes should be back in the classrooms continuing instruction at the end of your recess times. All grade levels should follow the recess schedule and go to recess at your assigned time and area. Upper grades please review your schedules and assigned recess areas. Please encourage students to bring a water bottle for recess daily. Also, do not allow students to take hoodies/jackets outside. It is still over 90 degrees and we do not want students to over heat. If students are using the basketball goal do not let them pull on the net or drag it down. We only have one net for the goal. Teachers should actively monitor students during recess.
Some online courses have been added to your OneSource learning. If you have been assigned a new course, please continue to complete them.
This week we have several things happening on campus:
- Circle Testing Window 9/18 - 10/20
- Dibels/Lectura Window 9/18 - 10/20
- PLC Wednesday in Ms. Flores' office
Here are a few Glows/Grows from what we saw in classrooms this week during our visits:
Glows
- Lights are on in the classrooms
- Teachers are incorporating MRS strategies into daily lessons
- Student routines and behavior is improving
Grows
- Submit lesson plans on time. Four teachers have still not submitted lesson plans as of today.
- We did not have 100% staff attendance the month of September. At least one staff member was absent every day. We are tracking staff attendance outside the breakroom/mailboxes daily.
- Teachers are not using timers consistently during instructional time. This expectation is a non-negotiable. Please use timers throughout your instructional day.
- Teachers are not having students establish who their thinking partner is during think, pair, shares
- Students should have something to do while waiting for the restroom (read book, practice math facts, vocabulary words, etc.)
- Restroom breaks should not take more than 5-7 minutes depending on class size. Set a timer with the goal of a 5 minute or less restroom break
- Please remind students not to pull on the basketball net during dismissal
