Blue Team Weekly Update
Week of 12/2-12/6
Breaking News
- Blue team has adopted a Hixson family for the holidays. You can find the wish list here: https://tinyurl.com/rcpum9p. We would like to have all items collected by 12/12 so we have time to wrap. If you would like to send cash, Mrs. Camden will collect it, or you can use Venmo. Send to @Hixson-Courtesy. Be sure to include a note that says the donation is for the Blue Team Holiday Family. If you have extra gift wrap, bags, or tags, we can always use that too! Thanks for helping us make the holidays a little brighter for a Hixson family in need!
- Several of our families rely on school-provided breakfast and lunch. Each year, we set a goal to organize and collect food to make 20 meal baskets that go to a Hixson student and their family to help them during the winter break. Just like the baskets prepared during Thanksgiving, this is a collaborative effort amongst all of the Hixson community. If you are interested in donating an item, please see the link below. We ask that you have all donations dropped off at the office by Friday, December 13th. Thank you for your continued support in making Hixson such a strong and supportive school! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c094fa9ab2aa7f49-holiday

- The 28th Annual Webster Groves Holiday House Tour, sponsored by Hixson PTO, will take place on Sunday, December 8th from 11am to 4pm. This is the biggest fundraising event of the year and it takes many volunteers to make it successful! We have 6 beautiful homes and a holiday boutique that are opening their doors and we need LOTS of volunteers to work the event! The event time is 11am-4pm, and we have it split into 2 shifts. Please sign up using this link. We are also in need of treats for the boutique. If you are able to provide either store bought or homemade treats, please drop them off at Steger between 9-11am the day of the tour. If you have any questions about the event itself, please reach out to Teresa Herrell at tabrussel4975@yahoo.com or 314-607-0957. Thank you for your help and support!
- Save the Date for the Winter Mixer on Friday, January 31, 2020 from 6:30-8:00pm! The theme will be Snow Ball. There will be a DJ, open gym, and snacks available for purchase. No cost to attend with suggested $5+ donation for Webster Rock Hill Ministries.
Parents-If you and/or your spouse were active duty military, employed by the federal government or otherwise worked on federal property on 9/25/2019, we need your help! Additional federal funding is available to school districts when at least 3% of the student population is from homes with parents/guardians employed by the federal government or working on federal property. Please see the attachments below for more information!
Upcoming Due Dates
Classroom Happenings
ELA: Mrs. Camden
This week was Mrs. Oleskiw’s last week with us. Students took an assessment that covered all the grammar rules she taught.
We also began our Historical Fiction Book Clubs. Students were assigned a book to read and filled out a group calendar to plan their reading. I have asked students who are not keeping up with the reading to come read during lunch or after school on Wednesday or Thursday. I have also asked students not to read ahead. Their grades will come from quality discussions for book club, so if they read ahead, they cannot contribute to discussions in a meaningful way. We will wrap up book clubs on 12/19 (before winter break), so students need to make sure they are doing the reading and staying caught up since there is no time to make up work prior to the end of the semester.
Just a reminder, students are required to read two books each month for the rest of the school year. For December, one of the books can be their book club book.
These books count as summative grades. Remind you child that they must fill out a completed book form for their reading to count. Completed book forms are in the classroom next to the pencil sharpener.
I will be placing a Scholastic book order on December 15th for anyone who submits an order online.
If you’d like to donate books to our classroom library, we have wish-lists on Scholastic and Amazon. Thanks!
Science: Mr. Vorel
Before Fall break students took a summative assessment over forces and motion. Those tests have been graded and are in the SIS gradebook.
This week we began our study of chemistry in science. We are starting with the periodic table - learning its parts and organization. Students are then exploring elements and atoms. This will give students a foundational understanding of chemistry upon which to continue building. Soon we will begin studying compounds, mixtures, chemical/physical changes, and balancing equations.
Social Studies: Mr. McGinnis
This week in Social Studies - Students will have their District Assessment on the Constitution Friday Dec. 6th. .
The key is to review every night up to 10 -15 minutes, practice vocabulary every night and use your study guide to focus your studying. It is all on Google classroom.
Bobbi Kennedy, from Civitas, introduced the Model UN program. We will discuss the program as soon as we get some free time. Info on link.
