Horace Mann & Leet Connect
Sept 19, 2022
Attention Horace Mann Families
Thank you for your patience with the reinstatement of Seesaw. I researched the cause of the hack that occurred last week across the nation and I hope the information below will be of help to you in understanding how hackers coordinated this attack. This type of attack is why we see more instances of 2-factor authentication and other security measures with many of our online accounts.
-Seesaw users were subjected to a coordinated “credential stuffing” attack. These individual compromised accounts were then used to send a message with a link to an inappropriate image.
- *Seesaw was not compromised.* The attack was a result of a coordinated attempt to guess individual user account passwords, sometimes known as a 'credential stuffing' attack. In a credential stuffing attack, publicly available compromised emails/passwords that are re-used across services are used to gain access to individual user accounts. (for more information on how Seesaw responded: https://status.seesaw.me/)
Credential stuffing is a cyberattack method in which attackers use lists of compromised user credentials to breach into a system. The attack uses bots for automation and scale and is based on the assumption that many users reuse usernames and passwords across multiple services.
This video explains credential stuffing and the importance of not reusing credentials across different online platforms. https://youtu.be/oo2xw0mt6oI
The other area I researched was the new messaging feature Seesaw offers that allow group chats. This is not a feature we will be utilizing. I have turned off this feature schoolwide so all messaging is private between teachers and families.
Thank you for your patience in allowing me time to conduct more research before restoring Seesaw.
Sincerely,
Laura King, Director

Greetings from the Horace Mann Parent Advisory Council (PAC),
We are so excited for this school year! A quick introduction for our new families, the PAC is a parent organization that is basically a bridge between the school and the families. We hold monthly virtual meetings on ZOOM, where we can get updates on happenings at the school, share volunteer opportunities, plan fun activities for the students and teachers, and have a chance to communicate with the school. These meetings are open to ALL families, and we really encourage you to jump online with us.
Our favorite fundraisers are still going strong this year with Popcorn Fridays and Stadium Cleanups. Popcorn Friday is a student favorite, the PAC sells freshly popped bags of popcorn for .50 cents a bag on Friday mornings. The teachers will collect the money from the kids and our PAC volunteers pop, bag, and deliver them to the classrooms. We need about 3 volunteers a week to run it smoothly, and it usually goes from about 7:30 am-9:30 am. Donating supplies is another great way to support this fundraiser. We order the popcorn from Galaxy Store, and then get the bags, seasoning, and oil from Amazon. Finally, you can sponsor Popcorn Friday by picking a Friday and paying for the whole school or just your child's classroom.
Stadium Cleanups are the easiest fundraiser we do, and it is exactly what it sounds like. At the end of Bearcat Home games, we don our gloves and trash bags and help pick up the stadium. We send out a message towards the end of the game with a meet place and approximate time, for our volunteers not attending, and from there we coordinate the cleanup. The more volunteers we have for this the faster and easier it is, and kids are welcome to help too.
We are always looking for family members who want to step up and take an active role in PAC and become members of our board and help with the behind-the-scenes stuff. If this sounds like something you would like to do, please reach out! There will be more communication coming from PAC about ZOOM meetings, Stadium Pick up dates, and all the fun stuff we are planning for this year.
Here's to an amazing school year!

Horace Mann Laboratory School * Phyllis & Richard Leet Center
Horace Mann Laboratory School is located on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University serving children in grades K-6. Horace Mann is one of only a small number of laboratory schools in the United States. Horace Mann provides a hands-on, project-based learning, individualized approach that is only possible with small class sizes and multiple teachers. Students of all ages make Horace Mann home, from our youngest kindergarten students to University practicum students. Master teachers provide a unique learning environment for all students that include technology, innovative best practices, and exemplary educational experiences. From measuring temperatures and creating data tables at our University Pond, learning about recycling at the on-campus recycling center, roller skating and swimming lessons in Physical Education class, and multicultural education from student organizations on campus, Horace Mann provides the best educational experience for your child.
The Leet Center serves children 6 weeks to 6 years old. At the Leet Center, family relationships and children are our passion! At the heart of our learning together, you will find educators who see children as capable learners. Children learn through investigation, exploration, and communication. Our pre-school environment is a natural home-like atmosphere that is filled with inquiry and joy each day.
The Leet Center is also home to our developing outdoor classroom and we believe that all the learning that happens indoors can also be present in the outdoor spaces. Open-ended materials and carefully cultivated spaces provide a place for collaboration, thinking, and representation of ideas. Our learning community includes educators and university students who are working together to listen and learn with children. Children, educators, and families each play an important role in honoring the intellectual and emotional integrity of children.
