September GT Newsletter 2016
Mrs. Kruse
Look what's going on in GT!
1st- First grade will begin learning how to research by exploring trees and leaves through several STEM projects. Students will begin using an I-pad app called Tynker that will provide programming skills in a fun, intuitive and imaginative way.
2nd- Second grade will be challenged by a Mind Mission that involves building a bridge. Students will research how bridges are engineered to withstand weight, while being durable. Each team will be given specific supplies and be instructed to construct a bridge out of just materials given. Students will also begin pursuing their passion by working on a project called " Pursuit of Passion". This project allows students to explore different careers they are interested in. At the end of this project each class will put together a class video to share. Students will begin using an I-pad app called Lightbot that allows students a way to solve problems by using programming logic.
3rd-Third grade students will begin working as an engineering team by designing and building a roller coaster using the laws of physics. Students will research how roller coasters work and the effects of gravity and friction of their roller coaster designs. Potential and kinetic energy will be an important concept while designing their roller coasters. Students will follow the engineering design process when creating their roller coaster.
4th- Fourth grade students brainstormed different ways GAK could be used to benefit in the real world. Students worked in teams to create a poster or commercial to show their new invention or product works. Each group will create their advertisement, cost to make item, cost to the public, target audience, and what stores would sale their item in their presentation. Students will begin to build and program their EV3 Robot. Here's the website if you want to check it out. http://www.lego.com/en-us/mindstorms/build-a-robot
5th- Fifth grade will begin building and programming their VEX Robot. The VEX encourages teamwork, problem solving while integrating programming and engineering activities. Here's the website if you want to check it out! http://www.vexrobotics.com/
