Student Placement Considerations for School Year 2022-2023
It may be hard to believe, but it’s already time for us to begin planning for the 2022-2023 school year! In placing students in classrooms for next year, it is our top priority to ensure that students are distributed equally by classroom for total number of students, gender of students, abilities of students, success of students overall, and personalities of individual students. We strongly encourage parents to allow educators to make the important decision about student placement. Weston teachers, along with the principal, are in the best position to consider all of the variables when determining the best placement for each child. It is educationally advantageous to have professional educators look at teaching and learning, consider all the above factors, and make the best possible placement for each child.
If parents have information they would like to be considered in placing their child, they should make it known using the Placement Consideration Form, which will be available starting May 2, 2022 in the school office. Instructions are included on the form and all forms must be returned no later than May 9, 2022.

CALLING ALL PRESCHOOL STUDENTS FOR THE 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR
Now is the time to register your upcoming 3 & 4 year-old children for Preschool for the 2022-2023 school year. Weston Elementary provides several high-quality preschool programs that will suit every family’s needs. Preschool Round-up is on Thursday, April 14, 2022 by appointment only. Please call (810) 724-9812 for more information.
Imlay City Preschool is a tuition-based preschool for children who will be 3 and 4-years-old by September 1, 2022. It runs Monday through Thursday and there are two half day sessions (morning and afternoon session).
Imlay City GSRP (Great Start Readiness Program) is a state funded full-day preschool program for children who meet certain eligibility factors that may put them at educational risk. Every family must first meet the income eligibility to qualify. Once income is verified, additional eligibility factors will be discussed. Children are enrolled into GSRP giving priority to those with the highest eligibility factors. GSRP enrollment is not guaranteed until the Governor releases funds, typically in August. However, it is important to start the application process now. Children must be 4 years old by September 1, 2022 (or December 1, 2022 with a signed waiver, and if spots are available.)
Head Start is a federally funded full-day preschool program for 3 and 4-year-old children. (Children must be 3 by September 1, 2022). Like GSRP, Head Start is based upon income and eligibility factors and enrollment is given to those children with the highest eligibility factors.
Weston Elementary also offers childcare for before and after Preschool and on Fridays.
Please bring the following documents to Preschool Round-up: child’s original birth certificate, updated immunization record or waiver, 2021 taxes or W2’s (and any other proof of income), parent/legal guardian’s driver’s license/state ID, utility bill (as a second proof of residency), and, if applicable, court custody and child support documents.

Summer Learning Activities for all Kids!
· This activity helps your child build both reading and counting skills. Create a word list, writing each of the words on a sticky note. Hide each sticky note somewhere. Help your child use the word list to search for as many of the words as he or she can find. Each time your child finds a word, ask him or her to read it out loud. Once your child has found all the words, read them again and count how many of each word he or she found. You can also build advanced skills by having your child use the words found to create a sentence or short story.
· Practice reading and spelling skills and have fun outside at the same time with a chalk word ladder. Write out a word on each empty space of the ladder, and have your child start at the bottom. Each time he or she moves up the ladder, ask your child to sound out the word he or she lands on. When he or she reaches the top, turn around and do the ladder backward. You can also practice counting by swapping the words out for numbers.
Practice words, math problems, matching, and more with this giant outdoor paper plate memory game. Gather up some paper plates and draw items on each. These can be shapes, colors, words, or numbers depending on what you want to practice with your child. Make sure you draw two of each item so you have a pair. Spread the plates face down on the lawn and challenge your child to find the matches. To add an extra challenge for older children, play this game with numbers and ask them to add or multiply each of the numbers together. You can even make cleanup a learning exercise by having your child pick up the plates in pairs.
Help your child improve his or her math skills by writing a secret message he or she has to decode to read. First, decide what your message will be, assigning a number to each letter in your message. Create math equations that match the answers needed to reveal the message. Then, create a decoder list that includes each letter of the alphabet your child will use to decode the message. You can even give your child a bit of extra incentive by making the secret message the Wi-Fi password for the day!
