Music Message from Mrs. Chenier
Music Class has been a blast!
3rd Grade--We have demonstrated music expression by using dynamics, found the beat in various songs, played several combinations of different rhythms, and recognized basic notation in written music. We have learned several music patterns (round, call and response, unison, echo, partner songs) and the students have been able to identify the patterns in other music genres.
4th Grade—Students are getting acquainted with their recorders and moving along on the ladder to achieving black belt status. Several classes are on green belt—only five more to go!
5th Grade—We are in Ukulele Zone! Students have learned five chords and four songs. We will add a few more chords and a few more songs to the list, so watch out “America’s Got Talent”.
Art Action with Mr. Daniel
Our YES 3rd grade art students will use their creative ability to develop colorful landscapes in oil pastel, inspired by the work of "Georgia O'Keeffe."
Our YES 4th grade art students will create "Mixed-Media Paper Airplane Renderings." They will make use of line, space, form, color, texture, and rhythm to develop these compositions. We will study the works of M.C. Escher.
Our YES 5th grade art students will develop "Block-Headed Superheroes" along with an original story for their character. We will also study the work of Charles Schulz and Stan Lee.
The Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
October Guidance lessons will focus on safety issues. Parents please make sure your children know their full address and contact number for at least one parent. Our third and fifth grade classes will have prevention lessons based on Governor Bentley’s signing of law HB 197, known as Erin’s Law. Safe communities, internet safety, and personal boundaries lessons will be delivered through Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum. Please visit the website for more information: www.safersmarterkids.org. Be on the lookout for our information letter coming home.
Fourth grade lessons will focus on healthy choices in eating, sleeping, exercising, and using refusal skills to avoid risky behaviors.
We will also be celebrating Red Ribbon Week during the last full week of October. This is a national campaign focusing on drug and violence prevention awareness. Red Ribbons have been worn since 1985 to help educate and encourage children to participate in drug prevention activities.
Quote of the month:
"Gain peace inside yourself by practicing good character traits such as honesty, respect, responsibility and courage.
*When you are honest, you never have to feel guilty.
*When you respect others and act responsibly you gain higher self-esteem.
*It takes courage to practice good character traits when those around you choose not to do the same, but it’s peaceful to know you have chosen the right thing."
By Donna B. Forrest, EdS.
Fitness Fun with Coach Smith
We are currently in our Punt, Pass, and Kick Unit. We will start our Handball Unit in the middle of October.
NEWS in PE: Homework Fitness Challenge is in full swing. Students may turn in their calendar at the end of each month to win cool prizes. After school Fitness Club and Team Handball Club (4th/5th Grade) will start on November 7th and will run through December 19th for Season 1. Information will be sent home soon.
The Computer Lab Latest with Miss Ball
The students will be working on their typing skills by using the typing program called Type To Learn 4. This typing program helps increase the student's ability to "touch type." Without it, students lose valuable time searching the keyboard. This program provides engaging, skill-targeted typing lessons and formative and informative assessment tests.
Leader Lessons
October Habit and Manner Focus:
Habit 3: Put First Things First
Key Phrase: I will do my homework, then play!
What this habit looks like in action: I do my work before I play. I know what my responsibilities are, and I do them based on what is most important. I practice self-control.
Habit 4: Think Win-Win
Key Phrase: I believe we can all win!
What this habit looks like in action: I want everyone to be a success. I don’t have to put others down to get what I want.
When there is a conflict, I look for solutions that will make everyone feel good.
Manner Focus: Say “Please,” when asking and “Thank you,” when receiving.
