Great Workshops!
First of all I would like to thank the WSWHE BOCES for making it possible for so many of our librarians to attend conferences like this one. It is difficult for me and I am sure other small school librarians to be able to attend larger more distant conferences. Have the support of our SLS is so essential to us having the tools to continue to be successful at what we do.
Being that I travel from so far, I usually end up going down a day early which means that I meet some new people during the “Dinner on the Town” and be a part of the evening entertainment sections. Dinner was wonderful and the story telling was fabulous. If you have not had a chance to listen to Jonathan Kruk, storyteller you should take a look at his website and see if he is entertaining anywhere near you. He is a very talented storyteller and his fashion style is very a•vant-garde.
I attended the Mermaids, Metacognition and Messiness workshop because I am going to be having a scheduled 7th grade library class next year for the first time and was looking for some ideas on how to engage the students. The presenters were very dynamic and were willing to share what worked and what did not work with their project.
I also chose to attend the Librarian’s Role in Implementing the Social Studies Framework session. I wish that there was more information available at this time on the framework. It still seems to be very nebulous and difficult to have a serious discussion about how to implement.
The Exploring Library Resources with DPLA session was really good. Ms. DeMaine was very familiar with the product and answered every question. The Digital Public Library Association is trying to change the way people look at information. Who owns it, how should it be managed and how we can gain access. If you get a minute most definitely check out their website, there is so much information there.
My favorite though was Catch on to Coding. I am already trying to figure out a way to start a coding club at my school. I am looking forward very much to this project.
The keynote speakers, vendors and authors were all wonderful.
