Celebrating 40 Years of Excellence
November 4, 2016
Dear Colt Parents,
Student voice is an important initiative throughout GCISD and CMS is embracing the power of student voice. This past week GCISD & CMS were represented well at a professional educational conference held in Dallas, by one of our incredible 8th grade student-leaders, Sarah Halai. Educators throughout the state have made many positive comments on the insight that Sarah provided, which was also seen on Twitter and other social media outlets. At CMS our students are embracing GCISD's Portrait of the Graduate (P.O.G.), which focuses on our students being skilled problem solvers, effective communicators, collaborative workers, global citizens, and self-regulated learners. The impact that Sarah had on many professionals is profound and another example of how together with you, at CMS we continue to focus on the P.O.G. and educate the whole child.
Don't forget to turn back your clocks on Sunday, and I hope that you have a great weekend!
BEST,
David Arencibia, Ed.D.

Geography Bee - Qualifying Exam
Monday, November 7 all students are invited to take a digital qualifying exam. Students report to the library during advisory with a charged and ready device.
The top students from the first round will be invited to participate in the CMS Geography Bee on Thursday, December 1, from 8:30am -11:30am in the CMS Cafeteria. The overall champion and runner up will be named the same day.
NJHS Food Drive
Every year at CMS, the NJHS members host a GRACE food drive to help our neighbors in need. Our NJHS students ask that families participate in bringing canned foods, and drop them off in front of the Learning Commons (library) in the collection bins. There will be a competition between the different grade levels to bring the most cans, and the winning grade will get a fun advisory day outside or in the gym (pending weather) during an advisory period this semester.
6th graders: Please bring canned corn or canned sweet potatoes
7th graders: Please bring canned fruit or instant stuffing
8th graders: Please bring chicken broth/soup or box of Jell-O.
Please bring all cans by Tuesday, November 15th. For questions you can email christina.moy@gcisd.net and or lauren.smith@gcisd.net

BOBBY BRAGAN
On September 16 and September 19 we talked to 8th grade English classes about the Bobby Bragan Scholarship. Students complete an application and a 500-700 word handwritten essay that is submitted to the campus and blind copy judged by three judges. The top scoring male student and the top scoring female student have their applications and essays sent to Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation for the final judging. Applications and essays are due back to CMS 8th grade English teachers – Mrs. Smith, Mr. Woolley or Mrs. Lilley by November 15th at 3:25. Please contact the counseling department for further questions.
