Tech Tool Talk
Tween Tribune
Tween Tribune is a free educational service provided by the Smithsonian. It focuses on grades K-12. Tween Tribune consists of daily news content for kids, tweens and teens. Tween Tribune includes text, photos, graphics, and audio/video in the articles. All material is put together by the Smithsonian to allow school age students to be informed on current events to science, art, history and culture topics. On the teacher side of Tween Tribune, it includes lessons, instructional/assessment tools and opportunities to collaborate with other participants. Tween Tribune also gives the teacher the ability to assign articles to their class for reading that they can answer questions on through a quiz or a short answer response through a critical thinking question posed at the end of the article.

WHAT TWEEN TRIBUNE LOOKS LIKE FOR A CLASSROOM
Classroom Ideas
1. Writing: Engage students by selecting a controversial story that students can write a persuasive argument for their opinion on the article in a post.
2. Comprehension Testing: Assign students to post summaries of the article you've assigned for students to read to demonstrate their understanding of the information in the article.
3. Collaboration & Creativity: Ask students to work together and develop a newscast for the articles that they've liked best throughout the week, month or however often Tween Tribune is used in your classroom.
SOME AWESOME FEATURES
Lesson Planning
Tween Tribune offers lesson plans to make getting started using the site easier. These lesson plans hit common core standards as well. The lesson plan range from simple lessons of answering specific questions to engaging students in comprehension, discussion and critical thinking.
Lexile Levels
This is an AWESOME feature! This allows the teacher to select articles based on the Lexile level of his/her students. This is great because we know that not every child reads at the same level. Having this feature allows the teacher to assign articles to students and have those articles already set to that particular students reading level.
What Do You See?
"What Do You See?" is a fun section dedicated to a picture. A different picture is posted each time you click on the link. Students can click here and post what they think they see. Great way for students to interpret things and get creative!
Monday Morning Ready!!
Under the "Teacher" tab on Tween Tribune, teachers can access a section called Monday Morning Ready. This section is dedicated to lesson plans that gets your week ready for your students. You can click on different articles that you may be interested in for your class. Once a teacher has found one they like, they can view the resources to the lesson plan for the article and incorporate them into their daily lesson plans.
