Superintendent's Daily Message May 12, 2020
I hope you had a nice day. I am sure that you are looking forward to the warm weather that is coming.
This edition of The Herald includes daily videos from our Principals, wellness and theater videos, storytime videos, and videos from our recent virtual talent show. It also includes a fun video made by the Brandt Elementary School staff, information about our schools' PLTW distinctions, the Move the World Blog featuring Connors Elementary School, Hoboken Middle School's virtual book clubs, and an invitation to participate in the district's Diversity Day.
I will continue to check in with all of you daily to be sure that everyone is okay. I hope that you will also check in with me. If you would like to send me photos or videos of your children being creative or silly, or even showing off a talent, please do so. I will include them in future editions of The Herald.
Stay well. I assure you that I will keep you updated every step of the way. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at your convenience.
Sincerely,
Superintendent Johnson

May 21st is Diversity Day in the Hoboken Public School District
In 2001, UNESCO adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and in December 2002, the United Nations General Assembly declared May 21 to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. Hoboken Schools recognizes the importance of celebrating diversity and have listed ways below that we can all participate in World Day for Cultural Diversity.
You may participate in as many activities that you would like. Please send a separate email with a photo to Dr. Pollins (Tpollins@hoboken.k12.nj.us) of your participation. Put the name of the activity in the subject line for each email and please remember to list the name of the student in the body of the email. Send all submissions on May 18th by 9:00 am.
Exploration of Different Cultural Foods
As a family, research food from another culture. Explore commonalities and differences in the preparation and presentation of foods between your culture and one you chose to research. Send a picture of the process of making the food and/or a picture of the finished dish to Dr. Pollins at Tpollins@hoboken.k12.nj.us. All submissions will be compiled to share.
Different Language Alphabets
To compare different written languages, do a google search of the alphabet in another language. Use the alphabet to write your name (For example, Braille, Arabic, Spanish or Japanese kanji). Share a photo of your name in English and the language of your choice by emailing Dr. Pollins at Tpollins@hoboken.k12.nj.us. All submissions will be compiled to share.
Words of Respect
Research words and terms from various cultures that are commonly used to show respect. Be sure to add pronunciation tips so we can all practice saying the word. We will post a place to comment with your word on Twitter. Here are some suggestions:
Hello:
hola [OH-la] (Spanish)
marhaba [MAR-hah-bah] (Arabic)
ni-hao [NEE- how] (Mandarin Chinese)
Thank you:
domo arigato [doh-mo a-REE-ga-toe](Japanese)
salamat po [sa-LA-mat-po] (Tagalog)
motshakeram [MOAT-sheh- KER-am] (Farsi)
Appreciate Diversity Logo Contest
Create a logo that represents the diversity of Hoboken. All students who submit a drawing will be entered into a raffle to win a gift card. 5 winners will be randomly selected. Please submit all entries to Dr. Pollins at Tpollins@hoboken.k12.nj.us. All submissions will be compiled to share.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have a rich heritage thousands of years old and have helped shape the history of the United States. It is important for all Americans to know about the contributions and histories of the Asian-Pacific American experience in the United States.
The origin of Asian/Pacific-American Heritage Month dates back to the 95th Congress (1977-1978) when five joint resolutions were introduced proposing that a week in May be designated to commemorate the accomplishments of Asian/Pacific Americans. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed the resolution and in 1990, President George H. W. Bush expanded the celebration from a week to a month. The proclamation did not include an annual designation, and the president had to reauthorize May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month annually in the coming years. In 1992, legislation was introduced that would permanently designate May as the commemorative month.
The month of May was selected for two reasons: First, to commemorate the arrival of the first known Japanese immigrants to the U.S. on May 7, 1843; secondly, to honor the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. Up to 20,000 Chinese workers participated in the building of the transcontinental railroad.

Talking to Kids About the Coronavirus
As many of you know, I am a mom too. Although my daughter is 24 years old, she continues to ask me questions about the Coronavirus. I provide her with a number of resources daily to read. I fully understand that talking to younger children about the Coronavirus can be difficult and confusing based on the number of messages that are coming your way from news media. I have attached a link that was sent to me by Carrie Ellis that may help make your conversations a bit easier. Click on the link below:

Mental Health Support
The NJ Department of Human Services operates a toll-free “warm line” which is a resource for people seeking mental health service. The warm line is activated during events that impact the mental health of New Jersey residents. The warm line is available 24 hours and has language access; (877) 294-HELP (4357). NOTE: The “warm line” does not replace 911 and is not used to report emergencies.
