SSS Y-Chapter Makes an Impression at Kentucky Youth Assembly
by Sam G.
Recently, a group of 24 middle schoolers from Frankfort Middle School attended a mock-legislature conference put on by the Kentucky YMCA. They spent three days and two nights at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky where they presented bills, debated them, and had a lot of fun. The trip, KYA (Kentucky Youth Assembly) started on November 4th and ended on November 6th.). The students were able to get hands-on learning about the legislative process. Students from Frankfort Middle School came back to Frankfort for debate at the capitol.
The Youth Assembly passed and signed into law two of the three bills that FMS brought to KYA. The bills that were passed were researched and written by 7th graders Jaleia Hatchett, Margaret Wilkerson, Ella Denton, Samuel Gilbert, Jackson Gilbert, and Kylee VanAtter and one 8th grader, Rebecca Vaught. The third bill, which was narrowly defeated, was researched and written by 8th graders Olivia Miller, Audrey Gilbert, Makiya McNear, and Khloe Schwaniger, all 8th graders.
Frankfort Middle School’s delegation won some awards for their hard work. Jaleia Hatchett and Audrey Gilbert came back with the Oustanding Speaker Awards and Makiya McNear came back with an Outstanding Delegate award. Our Student Y club was named an Honor Level club. Our KYA delegation was declared a Premiere Delegation. Perhaps the biggest honor was having one bill selected as the best Bluegrass bill of all 26 that were submitted. This bill proposed putting free feminine hygiene products in public buildings and was written by Jaleia Hatchett, Margaret Wilkerson, and Ella Denton. Frankfort Middle School enjoyed a successful trip and gained leadership and debate skills.

Band Events in the Near Future
As a member of the FMS band, I am here to tell you about some upcoming events. The bad news is I can’t remember when the TIMES are, but I can tell you what's going on in the future. First, we will be performing at Candlelight downtown next week. Also, we will be having a winter band concert on December 17 at FHS. Another piece of bad news is I won’t be in the band concert this year. I will be in Disney World (sorry low brass). Come out and support the band!
Classic Literature in the Modern World
by Jaleia H.
Most of us are familiar with the term classic books. In Mrs. Gilbert’s ATLAS class, students are assigned to read classic books. Classic books are generally books that were written a long time ago, yet they remain popular and relevant throughout time. As we study them, Mrs. Gilbert asks us to consider the following quetions:
- Why are some works of literature considered “classic” and why should we read them?
- How does literature capture the spirit of its era?
- How does literature challenge widely-held beliefs?
- How has our language been shaped by social change?
Ever wanted to read a classic? Here is a list of excellent choices…
Pride and Prejudice
To Kill a Mockingbird
Romeo and Juliet
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
The Great Gatsby
The Giver
Lord of the Flies
A Christmas Carol
The Outsiders
Charlotte’s Web
The Catcher in the Rye
Of Mice and Men
The Time Machine
Brave New World
The list goes on and on. By reading classic books we can compare how life was then and how it is now. These books were excellently written and I recommend reading them sometime.

Upcoming Holidays
Veterans Day
by Maddie S. and Kenzie B.
Every year on November 11, we celebrate the importance of the military, the army, and the airforce. We started celebrating veterans day on Nov. 11, 1919. It was the celebration for the end of World War I. This is a tradition that we continue to support and be appreciative toward our protectors and our veterans. We appreciate that these veterans are willing to put their time into protecting our country and citizens.
This Christmas Elf Is Still On Break: Is Christmas Coming Too Early?
by Campbell S. (aka Angry Rabid Elf)
With Halloween over and Thanksgiving on the way, most people are already preparing for Christmas. Many stores start putting up Christmas decorations to sell on November 1st or early than Halloween. I believe that many people and public places start celebrating Christmas too early. An example of this is a house on our very own Bellpoint that already has lights up for Christmas. Christmas preparations can start during November l, but Christmas music and decorations should wait until December time. I went into a JCPenney recently and as soon as I walked in the door, Christmas music started playing. I have nothing wrong with Christmas and the way people celebrate it, I just believe people should chill out with the Christmas. If Christmas traditions would just start at the beginning of December then I believe most people would be happy. For those of you who enjoy starting in October, I pity you. Thanksgiving matters too, I mean, it is a holiday after all. We even get off school for it so have a little faith in it. Also, there’s Black Friday. It deserves some love too. I mean we get to fight while we shop for overpriced items.
Many people overlook these things, but they’re just as important and I’m tired of people skipping over these holidays. Just a reminder, DON’T PUT UP YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE UNTIL THANKSGIVING IS OVER!
Election Reflections
Election Poll Results
US Congress Election Results
A few days ago, on November 6th America had a big election. This election would determine which party took over the U.S. Senate and House. In Kentucky, Republican Andy Barr and Amy McGrath were running for Congress, which would give them seats in the house. Before this election, the Republican party controlled the house of representatives and they controlled the Senate. Before the election started, Democrats were hoping to hold on to the seats they had and earn another 23 seats in the House and earn 2 seats in the Senate. Although Amy McGrath lost by 3% in our election, the Democrats still managed to hold on and ended up being able to control the U.S. House. Even though 2 seats does not sound hard to get, Democrats did not get control of the Senate and Republicans still control our Senate. The Republican party holds control of the Senate by 7 seats and the Democratic party has control of the Senate by 28 seats.
Analysis of Results
by Audrey G.
This past Tuesday we had midterm elections. These elections have caused major controversy and division across our state. With the sixth district House seat up for reelection heated political arguments were happening everywhere. The results from the elections brought up mixed feelings in the community.
The aforementioned House race ended with the incumbent Andy Barr winning. Although it was a tight race Barr grabbed the seat in the last second. Amy McGrath won Franklin and Fayette Counties, while Andy Barr won the rest. Fayette County, however, contributes to 40% of the votes in the district.
We also elected two new school board members. Margaret Tillman ran for reelection and
Libby Marshall chose to not run again. The candidates for school board were Tasha Box Jones, David Garnett, Shannon Griffith, and Margaret Tillman. Tasha Box Jones and David Garnett won the two seats. They will take office in January. The race was very close. Only 38 votes separated Margaret Tillman and Tasha Box Jones.
The Frankfort city commission also elected two new members and two returning members. Scott Tippet and John Sower have both served on the commission before. Current member Lynn Bowers came in last place in the race and former member Robert Roach dropped out earlier this year. Katrisha Waldridge and Eric Whisman were elected and will start on the commision in January.
Overall, Frankfort got quite a few new leaders. We also had the second highest voter turnout in the state. This election will determine many things in the future of our state and country. Please remember that every vote counts and that you need to vote in every election. In order to change the world around you need to vote for the leaders who will make the change.

Game Review: Black Ops 4
I think that the game is very fun with multiplayer and zombies and even the new addition of blackout mode, which is a battle royale mode like Fortnite and Pubg. The zombies mode is very fun giving us the new characters and even the old ones, the easter eggs are very fun and they can make us wonder what will happen next and how it will play out. But at the end of the day, all of the black ops are alike. Though they might be the same, they are still very fun and thrilling. I would give the game a 6 ½ out of 10. I would like to say that I would appreciate if they made the game so similar to the other ones.
